Catch 22 is probably the second greatest book i've ever read. It's simply horrifying and hilarious from start to finish.

I assume you refer to the Lord of the Rings, as the Hobbit (Best childrens book ever, by a country mile) is not dull, boring, overly long or repetitive.Originally Posted by yamangman
LOTR may be a bit of a struggle to read, given its length, but its deffo a page turner. Kills the movies stone dead anyway, but then, any good book always kills the movie version stone dead.
Tolkien was clearly a genius of unmatched proportions.
Some people think Michael Moorcock was a genious, I ain't gonna argue the matter

Zak, if you're looking for something to read then have a look at either 'The power of one' by Bryce Courtney or 'Red storm rising' by Tom Clancy.
If you haven't read them then the former is about a kid in South Africa who wants to become a world boxing champion. It takes him from childhood through to being an adult and is alternately hilarious and very sad. There is a follow up book called 'Tandia' but I don't think it's as good.
Red storm rising (though I think I'd be surprised if you haven't read it) is about an East/West war mainly set in Europe in the 1980s

indeed, and although I wouldn't normaly say this, the film is extremely good in coming quite close to the book. ok so there were omissions but thats only because its such a vast saga we'd be watching each film for about 5hrs! plus a lot of unnecessary padding was removed which i think is quite a feat whilst remaining true to the story line.Originally Posted by Vaul
on the whole though I would stres that movies are not an alternative to reading books...and never will be. 'nough said.
at the moment I'm reading:
pompeii, robert harris
Foundation series, isaac asimov (slowly getting through it!)
a life time in a race, matthew pinsent
Shogun, james clavell (another long one)
...i normally have a few on the go all at once.
i guess that lot should see me through for a while but i'm looking for a good murder/mystry type book. NOT that dumb davinci code thing...urgh, twaddle!

Just finished the Da Vinci Code. Reading the play "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" at the moment which I have to get finished by tomorrow ready for my lecture!!
The Da Vinci Code is a top book. Really enjoyed reading it, read another couple of his (Dan Brown) straight after but it is the same story line pretty much. Althought good i think i would have enjoyed it more if i had left some space inbetween and read another couple of books. The same happened when i got quite into reading Robert Ludlem books, read too many, and now i can tell what is going to happen.
At the moment i am reading Robert Harris - Pompeii. I have read a couple of his other books; Fatherland, Archangel, Engima. All excellently written, very good reading.
Dont know what my next book will be but maybe an Andy McNab/Tom Clancy; as i have enjoyed those in the past.
For getting good books, take a look at the second hand ones on amazon marketplace. e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...640939-3632464 loads of books at 1p + a couple of quid for p+p they are pretty much all nearly new.

finished lemony snicket book 2 last night, on to book 3 tonight, book 4 after that
These books arent "nice" stories, they dont have happy endings, they are cruel callous stories with endings that are lucky, but you just KNOW the next one wont be. Very good books, great for some light reading. If i had the time i could easily get through 3 books in a night. They're small, but good However it tends to tak me a week to get through one atm due to there being not enough time or me falling asleep cos i'm so tired. heh.
Go read them people!
oh? those not kids books? or is it something like harry potter where both young and old enjoy...

they're aimed at the younger audience, yes, but there's still subtle adult humour in there, they really are very enjoyable to read. The first one i read almost in 1 sitting (i fell asleep in the middle of it!!!)
if you fell asleep in the middle of one?! ? riveting read eh?
