I like the new ad with the female uni student, seemed to know more than the pc world "employee", about time they did one that was true to life
Bored of the old one, new one coming soon
Hmmm a lot of folks seem to have got there facts wrong here.
This is a pretty good little machine for the money (ill give you the 7300SE
is pants, but for £599 your not expecting to get better).
1. It DOES use 1 GB of DDR2 memory
2. It IS fitted with SATA drive (seagate barracuda 7200rpm) and not IDE
3. It DOES have a PCI Express graphics card..not agp as some are stating.
4. It comes with a Samsung 19" TFT monitor..all for £599 !!
I think this is a reasonable buy and a good starting point for a limited budget,
Whack a 7900GS card in for £120 and sell the 7300 on Ebay it has 512mb
RAM it will sell.
Future Proof - ie graphics upgradeable... if you don't mind upgrading psu, oh that's not standard form factor...
I find myself speaking to people who've bought a dell/hp/pcworld PC for £1000 and say something like 'I'm really happy with it - and it's futureproof!', I just don't bother telling them it's out of date already - doesn't get anyone anywhere.
The ads are terrible, totally agree. Blatant misadvertising, but where does average joe/jane go for a PC otherwise? Local PC guy who could be gone next year? It sucks, but the choice isn't there any more.
You have to admire the fact that PC world have managed to convince people they need Intel duo core processors for opening emails/downloading music/web browsing etc.
I remember the P4 HT ad, The new p4 with hyper threading will help you downloading things really fast!!!!! eh?
seems like everyone is using this term around the forum now too
we are all indoctrinated
where in the world pc world where in the world pc world where in the worrrrrrrrrrrlllllllllllllllllldddddddddddddddddd
Nope I dont work for PC World lol...all im trying to say was that lots of the previous posts had inaccurate information as to the spec of the machine making it seem way worse than it is.
As for a future proof PC thats impossible even IBM's Big Blue supercomputer aint futureproof so yes its a stupid statement for any company to put in there ads.
But at the end of the day i think you would be hard pushed to find a better specced machine for the same price.
p.s. power supply is standard form factor
kidna remind me of this..

agree with directhex
also if you have purchased one of the laptops you would have a case for rejecting it under the sale of goods act 1979 as ammended. "goods not as described"

Time for a necrobump on this thread.
Considering the outrage expressed here who actually complained to the ASA about it? Well, I did and the results have now finally been published online.
Result: Not upheld
Full report is here.
http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/adjudicati..._ADJ_42195.htm
"They asserted that only PCs with 1 GB of RAM, which the Packard Bell imedia 1569 PC had, would be fully compatible with Windows Vista."
The ASA are even worse than the advert... :\ "I've got myself a 1.0GHz Celeron and graphics powered by Crunchy-nut Corn Flakes, but it's OKAY, I've got my 1gb of RAM. "
And anyway, why should Vista be the only future OS? Don't competing products exist? (fair enough, they're usually less demanding, but I'm skipping past that bit )
In all fairness, I think the ad was misleading, but it wasn't incorrect or uninformed. Yes, to us enthusiasts, that PC wouldn't get very far come a couple of years when we load it with the latest software, but for Joe Public who just uses MS Works, Vista Mail thingy and Internet Explorer, it should be plenty enough. Of course, it would come with Norton, and that slows even the best PCs down to a crawl, but that's a different matter.
PCWorlds biggest mistake ever... was firing me =)
but then i was doing home installations on the side )
