Re: New 8800 GTS 640mb..disappointed by low fps

The X2s are still good in games, so I seriously doubt the CPU is bottlenecking it, particularly in newer games.
Sure, but in the context the post was made, i.e. when we are talking about minimum FPS that is being compared to 3rd party benchmarks, there is a substantial difference between an X2 4600+ and a Core 2 X6800...

Re: New 8800 GTS 640mb..disappointed by low fps

Yup there is but that has nothing to do with what I was trying to caution the OP about (i.e. comparing minimum FPS with benchmarks on hardware sites that use considerably faster CPUs than his own).

You are reading my post(s) in isolation from the thread (and each other) with a context that did/does not exist, I am not saying a X2 4600+ is too slow for use with a 8800 GTS, just that in that particular context, it is bottlenecked compared to typical review test setups.

I'm not going to explain my comments further because we are detracting from the thread topic with this non-argument (that is putting more emphasis on what I was saying than I intended) but feel free to continue in PMs if you feel that is not a satisifactory explanation

Yep thanks for the help Tetras..and I agree that review machines are nearly always cutting edge. Of course I took this into account when posting.
Results are a little better after full reinstallation etc. Will look into anything else I can try before admitting I was originally expecting a little too much from the card.

    Thanks for everyone's input.

Re: New 8800 GTS 640mb..disappointed by low fps

sadlt that prolly IS a CPU slow down.

I jumped from Opteron to X2 3800 overclocked to 4800 and it was a really big improvement in all my games and that was with an X1900 XT

I still have the X1900 and nowhave a Quad Core and it's even faster

Sorry....but that's just how it is.

Hi Zak33, thanks for the input..you're probably right too..oh well..anyway since reinstalling xp, ridding myself of all sorts of processes and startup .exe files I am a lot happier now..those low 11 fps are now 22 fps so I feel happier i splashed out the spondulicks on the new card.

Re: New 8800 GTS 640mb..disappointed by low fps

    Update:

I have managed to finally track down what I think was the culprit.

My X-Fi extreme music card..specifically the DLLML.exe file. After stopping the process, ridding the startup of the .exe file and deleting all mention of the file in regedit my video card is now running as it should..fingers crossed.

Anyone else have trouble with this file?

that's interesting...probably worth starting new thread (with a more specific headline to get attention) and linking the two together.
