    19in CRT native res?

    Hey all
Been given a rather nice 19in Dell flatscreen CRT today, however cant figure out what its native res would be. Currently at 1152x864 @ 100hz and its giving me a killer headache LOL!

Tried other resolutions, cant push it past 100hz for some reason, but anyone know what it should be running at? Display is awesome, gonna do very nicely for photoshop work, might even be able to bin the stupid sypder thing!

    Cheers

    Re: 19in CRT native res?

CRTs do not really have native resolutions like TFTs do just pick a resolution in the right aspect ratio with the highest refresh rate it can handle, if your getting a headache at 100Hz and it wont go higher try something lower 85Hz maybe?

ahh right ok, cheers Webby.. Always thought they had a native res, doh!

Will have a fiddle now and hopefully find something that looks right. Also hope the fizzing sound is just some dust burning off or I'll soon be finding out why it was free!

    Re: 19in CRT native res?

As Webby said, they don't have a native res, but they do have an optimal one.

Try 1280 * 1024 @ 85Hz. It might even say on the back - if not, post the model number and I'll have a look about

    Re: 19in CRT native res?

I think it would be above 1280x1024 as that is the res my old 17" crt was best at (bigger screen size generally speaking = higher res)

Non wide-screen CRT monitor aspect ratio is 4:3, using 1280x1024 (5:4) will look slightly squashed on a 4:3 display. 1280x960 is the 4:3 equivalent and should be used instead of 1280x1024.

1280x1024 is suited for the majority of non wide-screen 17" and 19" LCD displays which have an aspect ratio of 5:4.

EDIT: To make sure you have the right aspect ratio, load this page (Circle - Wikipedia) and use a ruler to see if the radius is the same all around. You shouldn't need a ruler though, if you got the wrong resolution you should immediately tell the difference because it wouldn't be a perfect circle.

    Re: 19in CRT native res?

I've got a 19" CRT set at 1280x1024, my eyes are sensitive to a refresh rate of less that 85hz so long as your Dell can do I'd recommended it. My CRT can do 1600x1200 @ 85Hz but small fonts are not very readable.

I would worry about refresh rates above 100hz (unless you're a gamer who wants to sync the game). As for not been able to set the refresh rate above this it might be your monitor or the video card or windows - I had real trouble getting window2000 to work correctly with my monitor.

what do you get when you divide 1280 by 1024?
what do you get when you divide 4 by 3?

EDIT: I looked at the 'Circle - Wikipedia' (see DDY post) in 1280x1024 and 1280x960 those 64 pixels don't make a noticeable difference to me.

Resolution isn't the only factor to be taken into account when it comes to keeping things in ratio.

For example, the distance between phosphor dots can be different in the horizontal axis compared to the vertical one (pic), which can alter the way things look on the screen.

In addition, almost every CRT I have seen will allow you to stretch the image on the V/H axis to get it correct. This does not alter the images resolution.

I just measured the circle you linked on my 21" CRT Samsung SyncMaster 1100DF, running at 1280 * 1024 and the rad/circumference is the same at all points to the best that I can tell.

Either way, we are talking about 64 pixels here. Most CRT's of that size have an optimal resolution / common setting of 1024* 1024, and have since forever

    Re: 19in CRT native res?

I've done a lot of geometric work on the PC a while back when LCDs began to replace CRTs, the computers I used annoyingly had locked resolutions and occasionally a CRT (which had the controls removed) would get stuck on 5:4 and a LCD on 4:3 when someone move the monitors around. I had to move them back again or find a machine where the aspect ratios matched, I could still work on with the mismatched ratios but was less accurate when scaling objects.

You're right Agent, you can change the W/H easily on a CRT to compensate for the difference in aspect ratio, but for a 100% fill it would ideally be 4:3.

Resolutions can be a nightmare, I feel your pain as we have similar issues at work.

HD has helped this to a degree though for us. It's the non film / non pre-rendered content for us which is the git

Argh! non-square pixels are a complete pain in the ass to work with!

I hated doing graphics for the video editors back when I did that kind of thing.
