Never had it. I'm guessing people only get it when they're running the cards full chop, I limit my framerate to my monitor refresh rate, so 144 / 144.

I've noticed a slight amount of coil whine on my 3080 FE when playing Rocket League at 144hz, but it's nothing compared to the 7970 I had many years ago which screamed!

Coil whine is to do with resonant frequencies not heavy load, in the past some cards have been known to have whine but only at idle and the trick was to increase the idle clock frequency.
while no card is 100% safe, certain board component choices, board designs and/or manufacturing techniques can greatly effect the likely hood of a card having coil whine.

basically electrical current flow causes magnetic fields which cause tiny movement in components, if the tiny vibrations hit the correct resonant frequency it amplifies the noise and you hear coil whine.

There's also the option of wax-resin dipping as heavily used in analogue guitars, old radio coils etc. Not for the faint hearted though.

Yeah I think you missed the point (assumed most have read around). I understand what coil whine is and how it occurs, from the reports I've read about 3xxx cards having coil whine (specifically the 3090) it's normally occurring under full loads. A really basic search in Google highlights the problems some people are having, it's partly why I limit my frame rates as explained.

With the rumoured/leaked 3080 Ti, some sources say there will be a Founders Edition. Would be interesting to see if the size is closer to the 3080 FE or 3090 FE, i'd guess leaning towards the larger size

Re: 3000 founders edition cards UK

    I've got a 3060Ti, and would like a 3080, founders..
However, while a 3080Ti might be on the horizon, if its not an FE I won't want one, but at the prices things are at the mo, what do we really think the price of a 3080Ti-FE card would be, not far off of 3090 performance but with more RAM than a stock 3080 (Maybe 18Gb, not sure how NV do their RAM grouping on the cards).

Re: 3000 founders edition cards UK

I reckon the 3080 Ti is going to be $999 MRRP (and available for 2 minutes), then $1700 on the (un)used market for about 6 months thereafter.

I bought a 3090 FE, at MSRP! Discord part alerts actually worked for once, which was a huge surprise - I normally get an Amazon link that leads to a card at double the alert price, no matter how fast I respond to the alert, or hitting Buy produces the now infamous "your basket is empty" message.

I wanted a 3080 FE but I haven't seen one this year and the MSRP 3090 is price competitive with the scalped AIB 3080s.

Yeah I keep getting tempted by the 3090FE drops having not been in the country for the last few 3080 drops, work gives me the money to pay for things, but then sends me out of the country so I'm not around for the drops, well annoying lol

Honestly I don't regret getting the 3090FE, I was looking for the 3080FE as it meant I didn't have to also get a new case to be able to fit the card in. I do like my new case, the graphics card is even better.

I managed to get a 3060ti a week ago, perfect for my small VR rig.

Sounds like there is a steady trickle of these cards given how many of us seem to have now managed to bag one. You just can't choose when to get one. That's an issue at work, I don't think I can expect the girl who does our purchasing to be hanging on Discord.

Easily the best value of the 30 series, if you can get anywhere near MSRP. Arguably, still worth it at £100 markup; relatively speaking.
