We hooked it up, switched it on and sparks flew a good 7-8inches out of the back and damn near took my eye out...them it smoked like hell. We took it back to overclockers (theyre just down the road, they never refuse a return when you go into the store and make a fuss) and got it exchanged for a different make
True, but the chances of a quality unit taking out the rest of your components is significantly reduced than an el cheapo unit.

A good point - whilst it did blow, nothing else was damaged, so it obviously didnt surge....which was a huge relief....i think overclockers would have locked their doors if i'd turned up with £1ks worth of pc killed by a psu

i have a antec true blue 480 psu for about three years last week i heard a almighty bang from the pc
    which turned itself off
great i thought but i took it round a friends house to see if we could fix it and to my amazement
    it booted right away

what had happend was the BLUE LEDS had blown in the psu

    lucky escape this time

but how long is it safe to use a psu for i know some of the new ones now have a 5 year ?

Ah - the dangers of bling... adds no functionality, but adds unreliability!

You must have just been unlucky - a PSU that is well designed, with conservatively rated components and used regularly and within its rated load should last a lot longer than 5 years.

Yep and that is the reason for spending the moolah. I had a tagan 480w u01 go bang due to living in a crap house with crap wiring. It was bloody loud but didn't take anything with it. My brother's el cheapo died and took everything with it.

There should be a sticky on all tech forums that says buy a quality branded PSU.

Yeah, but no one would read it...

...and if they did, no doubt we'd grow to miss the frequent "I spent £800 on a new PC, but the PSU that came with my £15 case just blew up and fried everything" threads...

    Re: Psu Exploded!!!!

My Hiper TypeR 580W PSU just went bang this morning. I've no idea why or if it's taken anything else with it.

The PSU is now in the bin and I need some recommendations for PSUs. Looking around Seasonic look to be quite good. What wattage do I need for a PC spec running AMD 3700, Epox 9NPA+ Ultra, X1800XT, 2GB RAM, 1 x Raptor 74GB and 1 x WD 250GB plus a Creative X-Fi Fatality and all the usual USB dongles and mice etc? 500W+ ? I cannot understand why my Hiper 580W went bang. I was just surfing the Internet and there was a massive bang and a smell of burning. The PSU was about 2 and a half years old.

I'm in Manchester but I don't really know it that well so I might just go to Scan in Bolton. A bit further but I can get on the train to Horwich Parkway and walk the 5 minutes to Scan.

    Re: Psu Exploded!!!!

Hi Marc, seasonic, corsair (I have the hx620), enermax (galaxy egx1000ewl is listed on the cpc elite page of custompc for high end psus) and antec (truepower tp3-650 is listed on the cpc elite page of custompc) are all worth a look.

A modular psu costs a bit more, but for me is worth it not to have so many cables cluttering the case up, and helps airflow through the case.

If you do pop to scans place, phone them before you go to make sure they have what you want.

I think you could get away with a good quality 400watt + psu, I heard that seasonic, or corsair are pretty good.

It quite unlucky that your psu blew up, but hopefully your components survived.

first take it out of the bin and 2nd rma it with hiper and then sell thereplacement you get on ebay to pay for your new psu for which I'd recommend the one of the corsair vx's or hx's if you want a modular one

think i'm gonna sell my hiper 580 and get one of those corsair vx's before mine goes bang too

Thanks vinnyT. This Hiper is a modular PSU. That's one reason why I bought it. I was a bit confused when I had to use every connection on it though. Wondered what the point of it was. Maybe I just had loads of stuff running off it so I did need every modular connection. What wattage would you recommend for a minimum? 450? 500?

Thanks shadowmaster. I think it's just bad luck it went bang. I wasn't stressing the PC out at the time, I was just on Opera looking at some websites.

I honestly have no idea what wattage PSU to get though. Does anyone know of any reliable PSU calculators online that I could use to work out what I might need?

Genius! RMA!! Of course. I haven't got the whole box here in my student flat. Do I need it all or can I just RMA the PSU itself? Any suggestions how I RMA it? Do I need to visit the Hiper website?

    http://www.hipergroup.com/English/faq.html-

All the info you need is there- Since your psu is two years old, you will have to return it directly to Hiper.

You also need to have the box, and all the other accessories, etc that came with it. Plus you need a proof of purchase, ie a receipt.

    Re: Psu Exploded!!!!

Welcome Marc, as to what size psu you need your system is not to stressful to the psu so you could get away with a good quality 400w (the main point there being quality), though a 500w would leave you room for upgrading some of your pc. The 485W Enermax Noisetaker at £58.99 would do fine http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=143949

The way I see it, is that my psu is going to be used in the next build I do, so I get a psu that's more than capable of running the present pc.

Or better still 500w Seasonic S12II for £55

Or a lower cost that will cope with current specs
Antec EarthWatts 430W £40.10 (made by Seasonic) if you can add another £10 to the order you'll get postage free.
    or
    400W FSP ATX-400PNF £32.49 details
    or
    450W Corsair VX £45.83

Interestingly Corsair (that everyone seems to rave about these days) have gone from using Seasonic to CWT. Perhaps they also wanted a reputation like mud in the PSU arena for the sake of a few $ profit?
    ??? News to me ???
    Source?

EDIT: CWT also make ThermalTake's PSUs both there high end models (toughpower) and there budget models (TR2)

    Re: Psu Exploded!!!!

Hi Pob255. I can get free delivery from Scan anyway. Doesn't matter as I'm only 20 minutes on the train from Scan. I'll go there on Monday morning after my morning lecture. Looks like ticket should only cost about £1.90 which isn't too bad if I can get a PSU by Monday. I'd have to wait until Tuesday at least if I ordered online. And considering how close I am to Scan there wouldn't be much point in me paying for super duper fast next day delivery or whatever.
