which sound card do you have?

Have you checked that you've setup the speakers in Vista for 5.1?
    Start->Control Panel->Hardware & Sound->Sound->(select device)->Configure
    Crosshair VIII Hero (WIFI), 3900x, 32GB DDR4, Many SSDs, EVGA FTW3 3090, Ethoo 719

Are you sure that you have the latest drivers for the sound card?

You mean one you've created yourself, or the drivers disc which came with the soundcard?

Drivers discs supplied with products almost always have outdated drivers on them.
Whilst they normally allow you to at least get the product working initially... you're always best to visit the manufacturer's website, and grab the latest drivers.

You'll find the ('Audio') drivers for the Asus Commando here.
Although I suspect they're probably the same drivers... select the one appropriate to whatever version of Vista you're running (32bit/64bit)

Re: 5.1 speaker problem with vista

IIRC the surpremeFX cards have been known to have problems... (mainly with hissing alot, but also others as well) i have the card myself on my crosshair and had hissing problems which turned out to be the really flakey drivers on the CD BUT also the drivers on asus's website were outdated and i ended up getting the latest from a random site, but ASUS have probably sorted that out now. so as the other guys have said, try the very latest drivers (but if they don't work, then try some backdated ones, as ASUS have been known to c**k things up in newer driver releases [mainly barebones]). (i also find the software that comes with the card very, very, annoying )

    Hello everyone good news!!!!!!

I have downloaded the drivers for my 32bit vista from the ASUS website for my commando motherboard and now ALL speakers are working I'll explain how i got it working.

    1. I uninstalled the old soundmax drivers and restarted the computer

    2. I installed the file known as AD1988_Vista_610015110.

    3. I went to Control panel > Sound and then set my speakers to default and then i configured them to 5.1 surround sound. (I suggest you do a test becuse you should only hear the left and right speakers playing during the test and nothing else) after that confirm your settings as 5.1 surround.

    4. Into properties of the speakers and go to custom, check the box by swap center/subwoofer by clicking on it, and then go to levels and put everything apart from the microphone up to 100.

5.Finally, go to Advanced and confirm the default format rating of your speakers. For example my philips 5.1 multimedia speakers uses the top setting up to 24bit at 192000Hz (Studio Quality)

Now play your music this should result by having all your speakers vibrating when playing sound.

Thank you to everyone who replied and suggested their ideas.

Thumbs up Re: 5.1 speaker problem with vista

    Great news!

And thanks for putting up an explanation of how you did it.
It could prove invaluable to others who use the SupremeFX card
