    Under DMA, it reports that:

Channel 4 Direct Memory Access control is OK

Under Problem Devices it lists my LAN and Wireless PN15 adapters as I have them disabled. Nothing else is listed.

I can't set the BIOS to only allow DMA. I tried to disable PIO mode, but there isn't an option to do that.

I've removed the controllers and let Windows re-install it.

    I've used Shuttle's own drivers, nForce4 drivers 5.10 and 6.39.

    I've un-installed Pinnacle Studio 9 ( just in case ).

    I've un-installed Nero using NeroClean and re-installed.

A low speed simulation fails at the end of the write ( cannot complete disc-at-once ).

I don't have access to another DVD writer to test if the writer is at fault and as the first of the two files will write, I'm assuming it's not the cables, but I can change it.

Next is a full re-format and re-install of XP

Just done a full re-install, back to SP2. Bare basic drivers to get everything working and then Nero.

It's still crapping out when burning discs, so I'm heading towards a knackered drive or motherboard controller ?

Time to hit Chillblast for a Pioneer DVR-109

Unless there is another DVD-RAM drive, apart from the LG ??

    That's not good news.

The LG in my opinion is as good or better than the Pioneer. (unless it's faulty off-course)

It's also a very popular drive and I would be surprised if Nero didn't support it.

Try another burning program and see how that goes.

I would be contacting the motherboard manufacturer and Nero for a solution.

You've tried almost everything else, and apart from testing your burner in another PC or getting another one, then that's what it's coming down to.

This really isn't good enough for up to date hardware.

Anyway, out of curiosity, what does the configuration tab say in the Nero Info Tool?

Also, if you have the perseverance, try CD/DVD speed to test the burner.

Any suggestions of a good burner software to try ( demo version of course ) ?

Nero Info Tool just reports the drive on nForce 3 250 Parallel ATA interface

The HD is on the nForce 3 250 Serial ATA interface.

Is there anything specific I should be looking for ?

When I run CD/DVD speed, which disc should I use and what am I looking for ( I can leave it running overnight if needs be ) ?

Have you ruled out the DVD media being the problem?

I had huge problems recently with NEC 3500A/Nero 6.6.0.8 churning out DVD-Rs with errors on them. Sometimes the burned DVD-Rs would play, sometimes they wouldn't, and other times, its fail on verify. Tried practically everything - different IDE configs, MS IDE driver, NV IDE driver, cables, firmware, different Nero configs etc etc.

To cut a long story I switched from cheapo DVD-R media to Grade A Traxdata DVD+R. Everything seems to be running okay now.

Also worth making sure that the IDE/PCI busses aren't getting overloaded during burns.

I have some Verbatim dics on order, so I'll try them before buying a new drive.

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been online till now.

Anyway, trying another type of media is certainly worthwhile, but regardless Nero should still report DMA as on.

As far as burning software, try CDBurnerXP Pro.

It's freeware, but is an excellent program.

In respect to CDSpeed, it's a very useful but complex program so I suggest you read the help file.

Some tests require any CD/DVD and some require a blank CD/DVD.

    ARRGGHHHHHH !!!

Verbatim 16x DVD+R's arrived this morning and burnt first time of asking.

I've been tearing my hair out for days, ordered a new drive and pestered people on here, who've also probably been wondering what the feck was going on. If I wasn't so chuffed it's working, I'd scream.

I can't thanks you all enough guys. Hopefully that'll be the end of my problems.

I would suggest that you drop the IDE drivers back from the nV drivers to the standard IDE drivers from microsoft.

I had a similar problem and swapping to microsoft drivers killed the issue straight off.

Its a known issue and been afflicting nForce users since nForce2 boards!

Foxile, for my own curiosity, does Nero still report DMA as being off?

Nero report didn't on the burner, because it's in my external caddy ( ready for RMA, that I don't need now ) and the Shuttle DVD-ROM is in the case itself.

It did report DMA off for both the DVD-ROM and the HD, although I was burning from a USB2 external HD to the burner.

I am back in the UK soon, so the system will be going back to the suppliers for some tweaks ( and hopefully a Winny cored CPU, instead of the Newcastle it currently has ). When it's back and I'm out here, I'll pop the writer back into the case and do another burn to see how it goes.......it'll be the end of May at the earliest though.

I haven't got an answer or explanation unfortunately, but I'm curious nonetheless.

Anyway, good luck and hope it sorts itself out.

It works and burns at 16x on the Verbatim discs, so I'm happy
