Re: Your most recently watched movie/film?

I just saw Furious 7, action scenes are superb no doubt but it's really too much for me. There was a point I thought Stallone will come out because action scenes are somewhat similar with The Expendables. I like their locations it was all beautiful and the CGI effects to revive Paul Walker’s character is also very good. I guess I expected too much from it because I was really waiting for this movie. I heard from people who have seen the movie that they were teary eyed by the last part, and I go, really?! The tribute to Paul Walker was just simple and for me it’s not enough.

Pretty good. Not unpredictable. I get a bit tired of Mirren doing her schtick but she does a good enough job here that she didn't grate. Ryan Reynolds is cool, and Daniel Bruhr is always value for money.

Re: Your most recently watched movie/film?

Got around to watching Furious 7 last night, the series has gone up and down in my estimations since seeing the original waaay back in the day... It was probably, shamefully some might say, one of the big reasons I got into cars and car culture at that point in my youth. The problem was that by doing that the franchise then undermined itself... Once it had got me into cars, what I'd learned revealed the wizard behind the curtain - That 80% of what was being implied about tuning, engines and the vehicles being used was nonsense. The action sequences were cool, but the plots threadbare and the misinformation rife.

Six films, an implausibly long runway and a lot of wrecked vehicles later I feel like I should have hated Furious 7, but I didn't and here's why. They aren't car movies any more, they aren't really even pretending to be. They're superhero movies with cars instead of costumes and the team behind them seems to have embraced the ludicrousness that put me off for a few years and played it to their advantage.

Yes, the action sequences are over the top, but they're shot well, not in the Michael Bay fast cut shaky cam style. The dialogue is SUPER cheesy but there is some restraint shown and at this point it plays pretty well. Insane things happen that should have made me turn it off, Vin Diesel deadlifting 3000lb's of hypercar so Paul Walker can remove a "speed drive" (a whatnow?) or unauthorised helicopter gunships and drones over L.A that weren't being harassed by the F-35's that would have been on station waiting for them ten minutes before they got there, Kurt Russell's whole character... All of it, ridiculous. When a HALO drop involving half a dozen muscle cars driving out of the back of a plane is one of the more believable action scenes in a movie it should be in serious trouble but I kept watching.

The tribute to Paul Walker was also, I thought, very fitting. Hyped though it was. It would actually have made a really good end note for the franchise but unfortunately it's made so much cash at the box office that another one is all but a sure thing now.

So yeah, I should have hated it, but tongue kept firmly in cheek it managed to win me over. I'll probably go back and watch a couple more of the older ones now as well. Maybe I'll be able to put up with the twenty two speed transmissions, intake manifolds that blow out footwells and monologues about living a quarter mile at a time a little better. Maybe I won't, but I think I'd recommend Furious 7 to anyone that found anything to enjoy in the last six

Re: Your most recently watched movie/film?

Saw Avengers: Age of Ultron last week. Lots of people said they hated it, but personally I really enjoyed it. Then again, I am an easily amused Whedonite. I'll probably need to watch it again to formulate a proper opinion on whether I prefer it over the first film or not. Off to see the new Mad Max film tomorrow as well. I've heard it's incredible.

Edit: Saw Mad Max. My brains got splattered all over the cinema walls.

Watched Birdman at the weekend. A strange one, still trying to decide if I like it or not. 6.5/10

    Kingsman (2014)

Okay, a new for a new world. Still belittle the girl. Passes the time, thought the Swedish princess at the end was funny.

Watched Enemy the other day. A Jake Gyllenhaal movie.

I liked it a lot altho it is not an easy movie. Be prepared to have to think, the basic premise is quiet simple but there is a lot going on. The analysis of the movie that I felt got closest was this.

Watched Senna for the first time recently, which I thoroughly enjoyed (had just watched Rush before it, which I absolutely love. So does the wife, can't imagine why, she's not that into cars...*cough*).

Re: Your most recently watched movie/film?

Just saw Thor: The Dark World. (Super late, I know).

It was alright, passable. If it weren't part of the whole on-going Marvel project I don't think I'd have seen it and I wouldn't recommend it. There's a lot more they can get out of the Thor character, he's too tame and shallow right now. They don't have to go super-dark and gritty with him, they can keep it light, but I think he needs to feel more like a serious version of Superman, he should carry serious weight and intention, and yet they could still have a laugh with a light-side of the drinking and viking camaraderie.

It Follows. Fantastic film. Somehow Maika Munroe has appeared I in my fav films of the last 2 years, this and the Guest.

She is however about to break that streak with an unmitigated pile of trash called Independence Day 2.

Kingsman, a rather enjoyable pastiche of the old, arched-eyebrow Bond films. Funny in places, shocking in others, I enjoyed it. 8/10
