    Be/O2 broadband

Im looking to get this, my Dad has a contract with O2 and im wondering wether its worth getting their broadband? Ive head a series of good reviews for it but what do you lot think, am i right in thinking that its basically a re-badged version of the similar Be 8mb/24mb package?

    Thanks

    Re: Be/O2 broadband

    Yes,
except for a few slight differences. With be you can go fastpath on the unlimited or pro packages. Makes a difference for gamers. And for those 2 packages you get a static ip. if you want a static ip on 02 its an extra £4 a month. Only if your hosting a server that is needed. But if you were planning to get Be Value for £14, and you dont need a static ip nor do you mind about really low pings then go with o2.

    Hope that helps

Also I forgot to mention Fastpath is the thing that gives you low pings. Its a setting on your line thats all.

    Re: Be/O2 broadband

Hah, im in the same boat as you.. Im also looking for a new provider..

My dad wanted to go with BT (Inc TV) I know how bad their hardware and general cusomter service is, so i hope to talk him out of this.

He would of gone with Sky but because a friend of his has had "One Problem" he thinks he will also be on the end of that problem...

However O2 seems great since we are all on O2 contracts, i had heard nothing but top notch news about their service and pricing.

    Re: Be/O2 broadband

I'm on O2 and it's a big thumbs up for them. My line connection is 100kb/s more than what I was getting from Orange. I'm only on the "upto" 8Mbits package but it's great value at only £7.50 a month.

    Re: Be/O2 broadband

I noticed with Be that the leadtime was 3 weeks? If that's the case I can't afford to switch, I need my BB for work reasons. Surely it can be done faster than that?

It is? If you got the MAC thingy they said the downtime is a few hours. If you are getting connected its around 1 week from ordering. Mine took 6 days from paying to getting connected.

    Re: Be/O2 broadband

I switched from pipex to Be and had virtually no downtime. Generally I think one service goes down then the other picks up. My Be account came online early, got home from work and no internet through my pipex router, plugged the Be one in and I was up and running straight away. Speedwise went from 6-16 meg

    Re: Be/O2 broadband

I think probably the leadtime hes talking about is getting it all activated at the exchange if you've never had adsl before. I could have had downtime for those 6 days so I stayed on my ISP till I got connected. Simple, no downtime.

Yup, that's what happened with me. Absolutely no downtime at all.

Sounds all good so far, thanks guys, i live relatively close to mile local exchange aswell (around 2-3 miles) so it should be a good connection if/when i decide to switch.

I've heard about this deal. A non-computer-literate friend of mine (and she admits it freely) was saying, "but what about Sky?". I said "Usually you need to be subscribed to their TV package. If you can get FreeView, I regard this cost (usually >30/m) to be un-neccesary." "Ah", she said.

Would anyone like to comment on anything that's just been written? I haven't checked Sky or NTL-Telewest or ... for quite a while, and don't know where I stand, tbh.

I think - when we switched to Be - we had a wait time of about 2 weeks. Can't remember why, though. I think it depends on several factors, not least of which is BT.

With respect to you, my friendly sir, I think 2-3 miles is considered "border-territory". It doesn't exclude you from that many privileges, (I think "Be Business (2.5mbps upload)" is <2.5km,) but to be truly "close", you have to live at - or within - a km of the exchange.

My question again (for the lazy...):
"Do you need to be on Sky's TV (&phone?) package, to avail yourself of the £10 broadband?"

    yes,
thats why sky isn't a good choice except for those that already have sky
So if you have Sky, get sky broadband. If you don't and you live near the exchange then get Be, I am around 1.3km away from my exchange and I can get around 19mb sync which relates to around 17mb download speed.
