    ISP for the younglings?

Does anyone know of an ISP that allows under-18s to buy an internet connection through them in their own name!

My dad, understandably I suppose, refuses to let me have internet in my room until I can pay for it myself. I can afford it, with a few part-time jobs netting me enough, but I can't find anything anywhere about the legalities of my owning an internet connection.

Do I have to be 18 to own an internet connection?
Can I own an internet connection through Prepaid/pay-as-you-go type things?
Do Mobile Broadband/Wireless Broadband have different sets of contracts (other than payment wise that is) that would allow me to exploit it and get my own internet connection?

A few things before you start posting:

    1) It has to be in my name
    2) It has to be available to under 18s
    3) It has to be legal. I'm not going to fraud my way into an internet connection.
    4) If anyone could link me to a site that tells me just how much 1GB of internet usage is in real terms I'll thank them lots and lots

If that is what he said, why not get him to buy it and pay him?

    Re: ISP for the younglings?

    Read OP

    1) It has to be in my name

He won't touch my internet connection in anyway whatsover. He wants to have no involvement whatsoever in any internt connection that isn't in this one room in the house that does have internet.

    Re: ISP for the younglings?

I think a PAYG 3G dongle would be the only way as I can't think of any ISP that doesn't require a credit card to pay or payment from a banks account

    Re: ISP for the younglings?

Hang on, are you saying that you want a separate ISP for your room?

So the telephone line is on another ISP, and you wish to be with a separate?

You would need another telephone line putting in if you wanted to do that...

    Re: ISP for the younglings?

the easiest route would be a payg 3g dongle. 3 do one with 12gb included for £100 one-off purchase. don't know how much that would be should you go over

    Re: ISP for the younglings?

Unless you are on Pay as You Go (when you pay in advance fr a defined download) I suspect you will be unable to find anything because most ISP's require you to pay by direct debit. This means that you have the potential for goiung into debt (or having the direct bedit refused. As you are under 18, you cannot enter into a credirt arrangement, therefore the ISP risks yopu defaulting on the payments. Also - as someone earlier stated, you cannot enter into a legally enforceable contract if you are under 18.

If you are over 18, you can enter into a contract, but the ISP may (up to them) require a gurantor for any debts you may incur. (Partly because you are unlikely to have a credit record - or have much income)

Could you install a sneaky wifi router on your dads service?

If not, prepay mobile bb is pretty much your only option. Or cable, but dad might notice that its been installed, its not exactly subtle. Oh hang on, your under 18, VM credit check new customers.

    Re: ISP for the younglings?

Your best bet is perhaps to discuss it with your dad, offer to pay for the current connection that the household has (as if yourr using cable or phoneline you can't have a seperate connection in just one room).

Perhaps try and agree on you paying 50% of the current internet cost or something..

Either that or go with a wireless broadband deal, like 3 do. Make sure you get one with free stuff.. then sell it off on ebay for profit though It'll help cover the costs of the connection for a few further months.

    Perhaps something like here:

    or

You presume correct. Bethere requires BT phone line... or is there a way round this that I don't know about? And, of course, I can't have a cable connection to one room and only one room.

Could you install a sneaky wifi router on your dads service?
As he's not yet realised the value of wireless... And, of course, the fact that all our network ports are already taken up by the vast amount of computers that sit around our house....

either hack in and steal ur neighbours wifi
Someone else that needs to start reading the OP before posting... MUST BE LEGAL! I said as much first post

or if you're over 16 open a bank account with nationwide get a flex account and you will get a debit card or go to any other bank ( i know from experience nationwide does this can't garantee all other banks do this)
    Having corrected your grammar:
Debit card? At 16? Hmm? Well, sorry to tell you this, but Natwest offer them at 14
Although, of course, Solo is used by hardly anything

Or cable, but dad might notice that its been installed
Doesn't matter if dad realises that it's installed. As long as it's mine it's untouchable. I have got SOME concessions out of him.

Your best bet is perhaps to discuss it with your dad, offer to pay for the current connection that the household has (as if your using cable or phoneline you can't have a seperate connection in just one room).
I have discussed it with my dad. Paying for it is not good enough.. as he wants his own internet connection. Obstinancy runs in the family

And we're using cable. Forgot to mention that :S

    Perhaps something like here:
Having cast a quick glance at them, do they not require credit cards?
