Re: Take a guess what this job pays....

I'm more than happy to concede that not all jobs require a degree. I didn't start learning until I finished my degree . However I've seen a lot of advertisements from big companies that wont accept applications from people unless they have a degree.

you've also got to admit that not knowing what a mac address is or the difference between UDP and TCP is an extreme circumstance.

You'd like to think that wouldn't you?

Interviewed last week, a Guy with CCNA, MCSE, apparently working in a 2nd/3rd line role:
He passed his MCSE (remember, that's 7 exams) "in a week" and when asked which exams he'd taken, "couldn't remember". He couldn't grasp even the simplest of Network configs, or understand the importance of something as simple as a DHCP server.

Getting rather good at reading CV's now; We've changed our interviews to be two stage; An initial half an hour meet and greet, then a second full on technical test, Q&A session. Experience and attitude count a hell of lot more than alleged qualifications.

I have to say that I'm shocked at the number of companies I've interviewed for in the past for a 2nd/3rd line role where the interview has been over in a matter of an hour or so, with no kind of verification of the skills I claim. Granted, my references should be able to verify at least some of those but... maaaaaaaan

Re: Take a guess what this job pays....

MCSE in a week sounds a bit ominous considering the testing centre wouldn't have been open on a weekend.

I've got a couple of exams to go for mine (4 months so far) but I'm trading it in for a broom. Sounds like the career prospects are better.

Unfortunately (for me) it's not as an extreme circumstance as it should be, maybe I'm just unlucky

Re: Take a guess what this job pays....

I interviewed someone for a DBA position once....asked them what siezed databses he'd worked with.

he replied, "oh huge some were over 200Meg".

I did question wether he ment Meg or Gig, but he insisted it was Meg.

I have a BEng but its in Metallurgy & Materials Engineering so not especially relevent - took me nearly 8 years of working in IT before I got round to finishing my MCSE , though I managed to pick up MCDBA & VMware certs along the way )

Its funny but the only people i've passed at interview (i only do technical part) have taken over 90 minuites. The last guy we hired, he failed some of the stupid HR ones, but passed his technical so well we took a chance, was over 2 hours!

In that time we talked very little about his CV, it was entirely up to him to mention how he could relate my questions to his experiance, not nesicerrally directly mind.

I'm on more than that on my placement year at uni!

Soooo glad I didn't go with some of the Newcastle based companies (offering up to £12k), would be nice to stay up there this year but I'm enjoying living in a new place etc

Hopefully get offered a grad place after I leave at the end of my placement year for when I have graduated....starting at £24k lol

y'see this is where I fall down in most interviews - I have a tendency to go into too much detail and apparently they're not *really* interested in your sekillsets and experience, just that you fit the company "type".

I feel much more comfortable if an interview takes somewhere between 90 mins and 3 hours, dependent on the format. By contrast my interview for the place I'm working at the moment was over in about 35 minutes...
