Contention ratios.
If you just happen, as an ADSL user, to share a DSLAM with 49 other high bandwidth users, your connection will be slow.
If you happen, as a "classic" cable user, to live in an area with some other high bandwidth users, your connection will be horrific.
By "classic" cable, I mean the stuff that shares the cable with others, like the old 10Base2, BNC coax type, networking. I dont know what problems Virgins fibreoptic networks have.
