I think it's down to the torrent seeds restricting their upload speed rather than any traffic shaping by BT though.
If you think that is the case, then perhaps you should run a test by downloading a Linux ISO image. I find that with those torrents there are always loads of seeds, and they don't limit your rate if you don't upload enough. I find on average with a linux ISO, I have to keep my client open for weeks after the torrent finishes to get a share ratio above 1, because there are so many other seeders out there doing the same.

If you want to run the test, here is the torrent URL of the latest Ubuntu release:

Okely dokely. Just tried with the Ubuntu torrent and it's topping out at 54kB/s just now after previously topping out at 90kB/s. Whether this is down to traffic shaping I don't know as the torrent I mentioned previously that was coming down at 500kB/s is going slow too... Yup. I think it's traffic shaping as the two torrents continually change speeds but seem to add up to 140kB/s. Maybe it's the time of night?

Definitely traffic shaping. BT are renowned for it! It's one of the reasons why I switched to BeThere and have never looked back. I really wanna join in with the fibre optic crowd but as long as it's just BT in the ring, I'm just not interested...

Must only happen at certain times then as I'm now getting a combined download speed of over 700kB/s. Funnily, the Ubuntu torrent is the go slow one...

Shame as I have an 8mb line but get about 6mb most of the time.
I also tested the link and it did not take long for it to go up to 700kbs

Dam shame as got quite excited going from 6 to 36mb

Is that 1mb on the one torrent link or on getting a combined D/L speed of all your torrents in the torrent manager?

Can i ask if all this talk about torrents is a bit over the top?? I mean how much do you guys regularly download?? and i mean how much storage do you have to keep to maintain this rate of download?

Surely there are only so many Linux dists available, what the hell else do you download that's legal??

I'd quite like to know that too, I always hear people complaining about traffic shaping on torrents but I think ISPs are well within their rights to traffic shape a protocol that's mostly used for illegal sharing and allow everyone else to use stuff like gaming/iPlayer/etc without it lagging/buffering.

That is a fair point to make, but I think it does make a difference.

I am currently on Zen internet, and I have a monthly quota, and they keep records of how much I download.

In an average month, I download around 15Gb, but this month (October) there has been a new Ubuntu release, and so far this month I have downloaded double that (30Gb). On the 10th October when the final version was released, I downloaded 8Gb on that one day, compared with around 200 Mb on an average day.

I don't download anything illegal these days, so all my traffic comes from downloading linux related stuff, and me and the rest of the family doing normal surfing & email.

I had BT Infinity but i wouls say its crap because they are over pricing and most of the time you get desconnected. Currently im with sky. the service is good and its cheap as well. specially if you are a sky coustommer and sign up for a year contract then its only £7.50 for 20mb connection but the speed is depends on your line speed

Not been disconnected once since the engineer arrived (that was not of my doing).
Over priced yes but it's a FTTC service.
Sky does not have a FTTC service AFAIK.
Me and a few other here have chosen FTTC as normal ADSL (LLU) was too slow - we're too far from the exchange to get a descent speed.
I get on average 25-26mbps with BT and 7-9mbps upload. I think you have the services confused.

    Thats brilliant news, thanks

It's encouraging to see a supplier actually throttling torrents again during peak times..and hopefully usenet too although thats a little more difficult to do due to the difference in access methods.

One of my biggest concerns when moving to infinity was that people torrenting/using P2P excessively (well above the odd linux ISO or streaming TV) would ruin the speeds/reliability of the line - its inevitable that a high bandwidth service like this will attract such people.

What I have to hope though is that this doesn't get extended to impact on legitimate use of the connection, as some providers have done in the past..so by this I mean iPlayer/Sky Anytime etc..from what I have read so far this doesn't seem to be the case though so..all good news at the moment
