Afaik you CAN just plug in a 24pin PSU into a 20pin board... the extra pins will just be hanging off the edge and shouldn't cause any harm. Don't take my word as gospel though

No, thats bang on mate.
The extra 4 are optional on almost all boards currently. Over time they will probably start to require them though.
Aslong as you can get it in with the 4 over hanging, its fine.

A large number of PSUs will allow you to detach the extra 4 pints now anyway.
