Cheap PSU

He's luckier than my old man his Antec smartpower died the other week and took out his motherboard. He was not a happy bunny lol.

My parents bought a cheapy pc from a local PC shop with a no name rubbish PSU. 6 months later a Cap exploded in the PSU taking out everthing in the PC except the floppy and CPU. They leared their lesson when I told them how much it would cost to fix properly with decent components.

I know about point 2 being important and the amps being important you could say the same about % efficiency as if you don't have a high efficiency then your just wasting money. I checked my psu using an Antec ATX12V and some other power monitor I borrowed off of a friend cant remember the name.

I was quoting the official nvidia recommendations as i remembered them I was just using as an example. All my money I receive from my server either is redirected back into the server expenses (satellite link broadband) or into my bank. The server has 8.79 tb in antec 900 case with an added 3 hdd cage it has 3 sata slot-load dvd drives it cost allot to set up and It runs off of an antec true power trio 650W which is the exception to my general rule

edit: sorry agent but I dont see how you could possibly use more then a 550W antec tru power trio psu without configurating some sort of 8800gtx sli system with 10 fans 10 hdd's and a quad core with 8gb of ram. Ill admit that I was wrong about that statement about never needing more then 550W (by a good brand) but do you guys not agree that the chance of someone using more then this power is quite slim?

Y'all missed the biggest porky.

Antec 900 = 6 drives, plus "an added 3 hdd cage" (we won't even go into where that added cage goes, seeing as he also has 3 slot loaded dvd drives, or the general unsuitability of the Antec 900 as a server case) = 9HDD. 8.79Tb would mean disks of 1Tb each (and who would have so much storage without RAID?). AFAIK 1Tb disks, although announced by Hitachi, are not even available yet.

Indeed, seagate have the largest on the market at 750Gb, so you'd need nearly 12 disks to have that much space, even more for RAID 5, plus you'd need one serious beast of a RAID card to drive that many, looking at about £700 at least and over 200W to start them up. And you'd definitely need a real server chassis for that lot.

Yeah, my 440Gb array is stuffed, a problem I plan to rectify at the end of the year, got an external 250Gb supplementing my needs ATM.
4 500Gb disks and software RAID 5 will do me, and a P180 will probably be nice to go with it, got an ancient 'tin' beige box housing that box atm, it's loud :|
