as far as I can see Excelstor makes drives for Hitachi under license. though if you guys can point me wrong, as ever I'll put my hands up and change it all

RAPTORS will NOT be removed from WD....cheeky gits I love them to.....but they're made by WD and tha'ts that.

    Howard....you know it all

only had 2 hard drives fail on me in the last 10 years, both were Maxtors. I gave me plenty of warning by reporting smart errors and the 2nd just went while I was using it - got a BSOD and then it wasn't even seen by the BIOS when I rebooted.
I used to work for Conner Peripherals a number of years ago and we would buy competitors drives and attempt to break them by doing all sorts of nasty things to them - drop them, whack them with a screwdriver, heat them up, cool them down, overvolt, undervolt......
Over the years every manufacturer had their turkey drives that didn't perform well so I wouldn't read too much onto how a particular manufacturer is doing.
I generally just buy the cheapest available at the time, seems to work for me.

I was pretty shocked as well; aside from having to tweak command queueing off on some boards, they've never given me grief.

We've had heaps of Maxtor drives fail on us in the Dell's we've had over the years... Dell's SFF Optiplex systems aren't known for great ventilation, so I guess putting Maxtor drives in there was always a mistake... thankfully Dell seem to be using other brands (Seagate, WD, Samsung) much more these days

my current record with Hitachi drives is very poor (bought 2 RMA'd 2), they get my vote

Another vote for Maxtor. 4 out of 5 Maxtors I have are RMAed and replaced with refurb drives but 2 out of 4 refurbs already started making same clicking noise again. I will soon replace all my drives with Samsung drives which are much faster, quieter and reliable.

Well, this a timely thread for me - a hdd failed on me last night (the same night i had to finish a presentation for work - stess!!). Can you guess what it was....

    The winner is MAXTOR!

Ive had 2 maxtors fail on me now, both SATA I drives. That said i do have a maxtor 80gb ide drive going stron (using this right now as a back up)

I'm buying a new drive now - thinking of getting a raptor 150gb
    E8500 - DFI P45 - 4Gb Corsair DHX - 4850 crossfire - X-Fi - water cooled and nice and quiet

Looking at the poll, it looks like my new Samsung drive in my HTPC is going to be still spinning years after my other drives are dead and buried, and my Maxtor drives have turned into pinball machines with their "clonk... ping... ding ping... clonk... dead"

All my chosen drives have been Maxtor, out of about 20 1 has failed, in a decade of computing.

I have had 4 Hitachi's in my ibook. All failed within 3 years. Got me a free replacement, but didn't increase my confidence!
