I had two IBM Deathstars die on me in a row - second one was the RMA replacement for the first.
Got my second replacement just after they changed to Hitachi - no idea if that was any better, 'cause I got shot of it ASAP!

Voted Maxtor as I've had two randomly die now. On the other hand my new Raptor X is lovely
Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly, because you tread on my dreams.
seems samsung is on top, although i doubt alot of you have ever had them, or had them fail
i always use seagates barra if possible. although i like certain drives in certain sizes. e.g 120-160gb in seagate and 250gb + in WD.
Maxtor. They're noisy and always fail after about a year. I'll never buy another. On the other had I would recommend Western Digital and Samsung as I'm sure most people would
It's odd, but I'm using my first Maxtor ever and it has lasted 2½ years of 24/7 usage with no problems. Maybe I've just been lucky with this one (which would be a first!).
I got an 80Gb Maxtor for a friend a few years ago, after 3 months it idled at 62C, that's almost twice as hot as my prescott on a cold day FFS. Funny enough it's dead as a dodo now. I've also got a 120Gb Maxtor disk that's too toasty as well which only occasionally causes bit errors. Maybe that's where I 'plucked' my opinion from. Not to mention that the majority of voters on this thread agrees with me.
Well...i have 2 Maxtors in this rig atm and they are great. (Lucky or not i dont know)
I also have 2 seagates in my other one and they are fine also.
I would suspect that most that dont like Maxtor have never even owned one.
'Bandwagon' and 'jumping' spring to mind.
Same as yours
We had 10 PCs at work with Maxtor drives. They were all dead within 2 years. The only Maxtor drives I own or am in control of which still work are 2 5,400rpm 120gb drives. That's it.
The only good thing I can say about their drives, is that when they do fail, you can usually whack them in a USB enclosure and recover the data pretty easily.
I've had IBM, Maxtor, Samsung AND Seagate drives fail on me.
I have never had a Western Digital drive fail on me. I still have a working 13GB WD from around 1998 or so. It's noisy and slow, but it still passes the WD drive test.
So I can't give a fair answer to this poll, except to say that WD - for me - would be the manufacturer I trust the most.

If you do a search on here, youll see that Ive had 4 maxtors die in the last few months. Hardly jumping on the bandwagon.
I wouldnt trust any maxtor drives as far as I could throw them nowadays.
I RMAd a 250GB maxtor that I had in an HTPC, the RMA process was good, they sent me a replacement before I sent the dead one back. unfortunately the replacement looked like a 2 year old had had hold of it, and it was covered in marker pen and scratches. I installed it, and I was amazed at how quiet and nippy it was. one month later, it was rattling away, louder than the last one, and 2 months after that it was dead.
A 160gb Maxtor drive died without warning, ironically as I was backing it up.
The replacement was dead within 6 weeks.
A 250GB maxtor out of my toppy recently died. That was a week out of warranty, it took about 160gb of saved programs with it
