No worries at all. I've been through the exact same thing with my CPU too by the way.

Its hard because first off, when people are comparing temperatures, they sometimes compare the wrong ones... For example, "SpeedFan" and other programs like that, take the temperature from the surface of the CPU, so its lower. (yours would probably be in the 20's in SpeedFan.). CoreTemp (and Intel TAT - and other similar programs) take the temperature from right inside the chip in one of its hottest parts.

So the exact same chip may be 30C in SpeedFan and yet 40C in CoreTemp at the same time, for example. So sometimes people will compare the wrong temperatures.

Also, prices are cheaper in America, so watercooling isn't as expensive as here. And even CPU heatsink+fans are cheaper, so they can generally just get the best CPU fan available basically, and its not very expensive.

And then theres the temperature of rooms. The exact same PC will be one temperature in a cool (air conditioned?) room, and then a lot higher temps in a warm room. And lastly, all chips are different. Some run a bit higher than others etc. And then theres the heatsinks... some are perfectly flat, and some are really gozzy, and theres everything in between.

    So it varies a lot.

Having said all that, I definitely think yours is a tad high, but like I said, its just not enough to be bad, and the rear case fan could make all the difference. And the thermal paste may settle and take another degree or two off. So if the rear fan knocks of about 6 degrees, and the paste settles and knocks off another 1 or 2, then you are on target with what the people on the other forum said. And if not, it shouldn't be far off.

Let us know how it goes anyway. I'd be really interested to see what it goes to with a rear fan. And if its not perfect, its still sortable. It may just need the thermal compound putting on again. (Pain in the arse to do.... but I've done it about 5 times with my chip, and every single time... the chip has different temps when I put it all back together ).

The latest version of speedfan gives me both core temp and the fake cpu temp...

    hi there again,

As adviced, I've installed a 120mm rear fan to blow out any hot air from the case. This has resulted in the mobo temp dropping from 32 degrees to 25 degrees. The CPU temp has dropped another 2-3 degrees and is now flutuating between 35-36 degrees. But please bear in mind that my room temperature is always high as I keep the central heating on for long periods:-

So what's the next advice? can i not o/c at all with this temperature?

well after turning off central heating and opening the window, the temp has dropped down further to between 33-34 degrees idle, so this explains why my temps are too high.

My next question in that case will be is "how do I o/c an intel e6300 using the ASUS P5B (standard) mobo???

    thank you

hi there, just would like to let you know, that so far i have managed to o/c the cpu to 2240Mhz, but orthos Beta is already pushing the CPU 63-66 degrees on TEST 4.

Don't know if i should push the CPU further or leave it alone or drop lower.

FYI, my ram is set to 1:1 ratio and is FSB is running at 320MHz.

I'd leave it at that...maybe drop a little. Its getting a bit warm for my liking.

I dropped the FSB now to 300Mhz. This has allow orthos to remain lower than 64 degrees.

However just to test, i went against clunk's advice of only running Orthos test. Instead I ran Orthos blend test and also used the Intel Thermal Tool at the same time. I put the CPU under extra stress by starting the WorkLoad @ 100% test on TAT too.

This bumped the temperature over 69 degrees, therefore does this mean that orthos never uses the full 100% of the CPU?

Also where does this leave me with my overclocking?

    thanks for helping.

TAT generates about 20% more heat than orthos.

Just so I'm clear....are you using the stock intel cooler, in a room with very hot central heating?
