Seriously Annoyed

It wont spin as it just clicks. I tried it in the new icy box enclosure i bought and it still wont work. So i am RMAing it today.

The other drive i got is making the odd click but its still working however it isnt inspiring much faith in the third drive i have just got last week. Think i will buy a completly different brand and sell all these spinpoints..

Also what do i do with the one that is clicking every now and then but is still working? Do i have to keep it till it dies?

Heya neon.

If you get speedfan, check the SMART data. If it looks like something is pretty poor (see the worst column, the lower the worse, I think they start at 255) then it might be up for an RMA. But I'd consult with the scan guys first.

That speedfan says the drives in perfect condition. So does that mean its fine? :S Even though its clicking the odd time like the broken one

I still can't get away from the possibility that there is a power supply issue somewhere at the back of this... did you try different power leads or a different psu? Can you try it in a caddy with its own power supply?

Its not the psu. Like i said above, i tried it in an icybox enclosure which has its own psu etc and it still never worked. It be dead as a dodo

i'm thinking once you plugged the hd's into that psu it buggers them so hence it wont work in an icy box. or did you put a new samsung drive in the enclosure and it didnt work? i'd also like to see how wd's cope if you get them. 3 samsungs failing is quite rare and I'm guessing it might be the psu.

Depending on your data storage/change patterns and your internet connection, something like Mozy might be a useful solution for backups.....

These are good, I have a few of them:

if you set them to RAID1 (mirror) the drives can be read in a PC without problems if you need to.

Same thing happened when i ordered my new PC from scan, one hard drive was faulty. RMA with scan was a real painful process, they tested it and said the drive was fine, even though it was making a very prominent clicking noise, and the array it was part of had failed twice in succession. It took more than 6 weeks before i got my money back.

I replaced it with a identical drive from Overclockers and not had one problem with the array since and no clicking noises.

To add insult to injury the 'technical expert' on the phone tried to tell me that the reason it would not work in RAID 0 was because they were not RE HDD's.



I realize that sometimes items can arrive damaged, it can't be helped, but the way Scan Customer Services dealt with the RMA was appalling. Especially seeing i had just spent close to 1k with them.

And the worst part, because they were unable to find fault with this HDD some other unlucky customer will no doubt be getting the very same HDD, clicks an all..

Needless to say scan lost a good customer with that transaction.

hdd's are the most painful thing that will hurt u the most if it fails. i dotn care if my mobo, cpu, ram mess up but my hdd? lol i would cry in tears man
