If a soft pull takes it off then it's still not in right.

Make sure the pushpins are pulled all the way up and in the position where you will not have to turn them. There is a little bump to hold them in so you want to push them down over that bump and then that pin will click in to place.

It's one of those things where you have to be cruel to be kind and just give it a bit of welly to make sure they are in all the way and in the right position.

Re: Best gaming machine for £500?

Thanks for the tip, didn't know it needed quite a bit of pressure to get in fully, in the end i managed to put it all together and am using it now, moving from a 700mhz celeron to this is obviously gonna be quite big, downloading the crysis demo right now to see how it goes without any overclocking.

Also, my 32 bit OS only sees 3.25GB of ram, i assume there's no way to fix this without moving onto 64 bit? I'm using Everest home edition at the moment to monitor my cpu's temperature aswell, any other decent/better programs? Also, my cpu's temp is at 40 right now, whats the temp i should be alarmed at? 60/70? Thanks.

No 32 bit operating system will recognise more than 4gb total system memory, you are correct in that you can't do anything about this without changing to a 64 bit OS. Those programs to monitor temperatures read the values that the hardware sensors on the motherboard report. Therefore two different applications will tell you the same temperature if they are bot using the same sensor and 'better' is purely subjective, i.e. pick the piece of software that you find the easiest to use.

There are quite a few alternatives, everest is excellent in my experience. It provides a lot of information other than temperatures too. Other useful utilities are:

H Monitor - Has tabs with lots of temperature information which can be shown graphically in many cases.

HW Monitor - This has a simple screen displaying the important temperatures. Also records min and max temperatures which can be handy.

GPU-Z - Will tell you the temperature of your graphics card amongst other information about it's specifications and current clock speeds.

CPU-Z - This doesn't monitor temperatures but will tell you lots of information about your CPU such as current clocks and voltages.

Core Temp - Will tell you the temperatures of each individual core in your processor, these will vary as each core will generally be doing a different amount of work.

There are a myriad of other applications, and no doubt someone else will step in with their personal favourite, but those are some of the most common.

Modern processor chips will not be damaged by temperatures in the 70's but with a decent cooling set-up most chips won't reach that unless you're overclocking. Nothing to be worried about though, 40C is on the higher side for an idle temperature but nothing to cause concern.

Re: Best gaming machine for £500?

Those are some excellent programs, thanks, it's kinda weird though, Everest shows my cpu being at around the 40 mark, but CPUID and Core Temp show all the individual cores being at the 50+ mark, any ideas?

Edit: Nevermind, for some reason the programs always show the cpu cores being around 60 when i load them up but drop to the 35-40 mark after a minute or so.

If you really want to stress an Intel CPU then IntelBurnTest is an excellent tool to use.It will detect any erros much quicker than either Orthos,Prime95 or OCCT! Seems to heat up the CPU even more than any other utility I have used. Another good thing is that you do not need to run it as long. A typcial run will be under one hour usually!!

Re: Best gaming machine for £500?

A couple of quick questions about temps, when playing Crysis my quad core gets to just under 70 (68) while the sapphire 4850 gets to 76, is this normal? Thanks.

The gfx card is fine, the cpu is too toasty though, that's the upper limit for these as I remember.

Is your cooler on right and which one are you using?

The Xigmatek one, and yeah, it's fitted on just fine with the thermal paste.

What is measuring the temps. That isn't right for that cooler unless it's overclocked/over volted too high.

Re: Best gaming machine for £500?

What Clock speed and voltage is the CPU running at?

That does seem toasty (forgive me for not reading back through the thread) what case and fans are you using? As the 4850 dumps its heat into the case you need good extraction to keep case temperatures down or else as case temp increases so does CPU temp.

Oh and what are your idle temperatures? Just sitting at the desktop for 15 minutes ish.

Re: Best gaming machine for £500?

2.4ghz, case is an Antec 300.

The Radeon is facing downwards while the heatsink fan is facing upwards and blowing air through the vent on top of the case, as for the voltage of the cpu minimum is 1.17v while max is 1.20v, idle cpu temp is 40ish.

Re: Best gaming machine for £500?

Hmm with that case, I would be expecting lower temps for sure... even your Idle temps are high.

You are sure that the cooler is properly seated and that the fan is spinning sufficiently fast? The only other thing I can think of is that your CPU fan is drawing hot air off the back of your graphics card which is artificially raising temperatures, unfortunetly for you the only way to test this is to turn the cooler 90°

First things to check before moving the cooler. Is the fan on the CPU cooler attached to the motherboard or a fan controller or just a 12v molex? If its attached to the motherboard what speed is it spinning at idle and does that increase with load? (HWMonitor should have this information for you) If the fan speed is not changing then we will need to look in the BIOS for the fan control settings. If it is changing then it should be getting to 2000rpm when CPU temps are reaching the mid 60s

Oh what temperature is the CPU motherboard CPU sensor reporting? This will be what the CPU fan is responding to if its malfunctioning and reporting artificially low temperatures then this would explain the fan spinning slowly.

Re: Best gaming machine for £500?

I can only move the cooler 180° because of a certain object that was already on the motherboard from the start, the cpu fan is connected to the motherboard, i checked in the bios and the fan is set to go to 'max' speed if the cpu goes above 50, although for now i've set it to 45 to try and keep the temps down a little, currently idling at 40-42 and the fan speed is at 1100-1200rpm, i'll report back later when the temps go to 50 or so when i play a little bit of Max Payne (Should i stay away from Crysis by the way? Just wondering how bad 67 exactly is, i hope it's not near the danger levels).

Anywho i doubt the results will increase dramatically which is what i need it seems, could someone recommend some good thermal paste? (And a good thermal remover aswell, no alcohol stuff here unfortunately) since i've heard the factory thermal paste isn't the greatest, while i'm at it i may aswell also get a proper cooler fitting bracket, i'm looking for this one (XIGMATEK ACK-I7751):

I can't seem to find it anywhere unfortunately, i've checked Scan and it's out of stock there and ebuyer don't have it, any other sites i should look out for when it comes to components? Thanks

EDIT: It seems that even at temps above 43 the fan is still maxing out at 1350rpm, although it's meant to go to the max speed which should be upto 2200rpm for this fan.

EDIT 2: I checked on bios and the temperature was pretty much the same, however it dosn't exactly say 'max 43' but more along the lines 'fan fully on if temp above 43' which probably means the same.

Re: Best gaming machine for £500?

As i said before, the fan header controlling the CPU will be working on the motherboard CPU sensor not the core temperatures so if you look at the screenshot below of my HWMonitor the Blue ellipse shows the core temps the Red ellipse shows the motherboard sensor value this is the one that will effect CPU fan speed.

Ignore my CPU fan speed I don't really have a 40mm fan cooling my CPU honest it is recording the rpm of my water cooling pump Oh and my temps are as I am running the GPU client of Folding at home so thats full GPU load and ~50% total CPU load (75% one core, 25% the other)

Mounting bracket wise, this should do you Scan Linkage

And Thermal Paste Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Cooling MX2 are two of the most popular.

As for TIM remover Akasa TIM clean or Arctic Silver Articlean
