as someone said, erm, lots of posts ago. Start from fresh and rebuild, booting at every stage. I've had a similar problem (back in the day) when bulding a fresh rig it wouldn't boot. We tried all the part in other rigs and they all worked. The problem we eventually found was that I'd plugged my HSF into my fan controller and not into the CPU fan header on the mobo.
Some motherboards won't even attempt to boot if the CPU fan isn't plugged into the motherboard.
If anything shorting out in the case? This could cause the mobo to power up briefly and then die again.
If you can't smell burining or see and signs of it, then it's very unlikely that you have smoked ya CPU's...
Hope this is of any help, and sorry if someone else has already mentioned any of the points, good luck
Steve
Winning isn't everything, but losing is nothing...
would a asus a7n8x rev 1.04 bios chip work in the E version cos if it does and your bios is totally borked i will have a chip early next week when i get my pc back
i slipped with a screwdriver and did ABH on my mobo so had to replace it so i would have that boards bios chip spare

Right, good news... sort of...
It's booting, but very unstable. Am trying to flash the BIOS with the original, just in case it's is corrupted in some way. The bad news is, it seems to be my 9600XT that's causing the problem, but this isn't double checked yet. On parents comp right now, have downloaded BIOS.
Will update you again soon.
good to hear things are getting back on track!

are you running 200mhz fsb?is the cpu voltage @ default? if yes to both try giving it a bit more juice
Posting on behalf of Big_Al: Pos not graphics card error, and reveiving the following error upon POST
CMOS checksum error - defults loaded.
Computer does not boot any further after this error, and have to remove batt and clear CMOS to be able to get back to above sit.
Pro and mem being identified correctly. Poss BIOS curruption?
; )
Can he get into the main BIOS by pressing delete ?
If not, BIOS corruption sounds a likely possibility, and its just managing to boot to tell you that. Very strange though, most BIOS corruptions totally kill the BIOS.
Ill assume he cant get to a point of reflashing it ?
Does it just hang after that point ?

when this message appears pressing F1 alows system to boot up and run windows.

It sounds like some setting is being re-detected by the BIOS when he go's into it (a non default one) and being used, when it shouldn't. Eg, bad memory timings.
Is this with his Mobile chip, or his old one ?. If the former, maybe the motherboard doesn't like mobile chips ?
Is he running the latest BIOS version ?
memory timings are pretty standard not very tight, they were 8_ _2 and half. this is only with the mobile chip. ive downloaded and flashed the BIOS with version 1008.Originally Posted by Agent

Problem def not graphics card as thought earlier.
as above hitting F1 gets into windows but trying to shutdown from windows causes a windows NT error (similar to BSOD) and causes the machine to reboot which alows system to start up again rather than freezing.

Haven't tried the other chip yet, but I thought I'd post a more detailed desc now.
Right, it boots and gets the 'CMOS checksum error - defults loaded' as mentioned above. Two options, F1 to skip, DEL to enter BIOS. I can enter the BIOS and change the settings (default for CPU in here is 14x133MHz and memory is 200MHz 8-4-4-2.5) but once it has saved them it reboots the machine and freezes again.
If I chose F1 it loads up Windows but the processor is only being ran at 6x100MHz and when I try and shut down I get a error which comes up looking like the NT4 boot screen (blue with white writing accross the top - I can't remember the error as it comes and goes quickly) and the machine reboots instead of shuts down.
Once the computer is frozen I have to clear the CMOS and trry it all again.
I don't think the error is to do with any of my drives, either sticks of RAM of the CPU. It seems to be by mobo not saving the settings. Any more ideas please?
P.S. You guys have really been great, and I thank you for that!
Whack your old CPU back in there and report back, by the sound of it that CPU ain't happy on that board
