I would say go Conroe (or allendale) now. Both the 6300 and 6400 seem good, 6300 maybe a better value buy after OCing but the 6400 matches an FX62 at stock speeds.
so ur honestly telling me the 1.86ghz core 2 duo (6300) will beat the AM2 4600+ ?
Yes E6300 at stock is approx equal to X2 4600+ but then you probably won't run it a stock since it overclocks easily on air. It's a better buy right now.

at default clock it will eazily beat 4400+. and sometimes even 4600+.Originally Posted by Ben_
also, once overclocked to 2.5G (almost all the 6300 can run ealily at the clock with default voltage).. FX-62 will be miles behind..

i haev heard no mention of hw differnet it is to oc a conroe to an amd 64??
i dunno what to think
except that i should goto bed
^^ what jimborae said.
conroes will easily dominate the amrket atm. a stock E6600 will beat an fx-62 at most functions, including most games.
My only concern is the lack of motherboards available which "marry" nvidia and the conroes. :<
well this is the problem
its new and i want somethin now
if im gonna go conroe it needs to be available now.. scan has the 6300 which i hear responds well to oc'ing so could someone recommend new mobo/ram/cpu to reflect a core 2 duo rig
also seen as theres no nforce support i may want to change the gfx too?
one thing i dont want to do is wait, no matter what the benefits!
Well you're at the crossroads at the minute Ben lol. They've only just ocme out, and I know it's Newton's law that the longer you wait the better things will get, but there are exceptions. I'm personally gonna wait for the E6600 over the E6300 because of the extra cache.
If you positively cannot wait then I'd probably get
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe Pentium 4/Celeron/Pentium D/PentiumEE/65nm dual-core/Core2Duo...
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 ZX PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400PHU2-2GBZX) (MY-011-GS)
The ram is flexible down to preference, but I'd stick with ddr2 400 if I were you...
and what about gfx, whats this talk of nvidea not being compatible
what i definetely dont work is stuff not to work when its setup, its my first build so i want it to go nice and easy and encouraging
and i also want to buy today or tommorow at the latest
