The 3700 looks a great chip but unfortunately I couldn't justify it atm.

I have just got a new 1440p monitor so with my rx480 I am definitely gpu limited and I think even if I upgraded to a 5700 or similar it would probably bottleneck a 2600 at this resolution. I think a 2600 and 5700 level card would be a reasonably balanced system for 1440p.

What gpu were you using with your 2600x to play ed in vr?

I have a Vega 56. Mind you, at 1440p I used to play using a 380X gpu and thanks to freesync it was surprisingly playable at 1440p.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Got this a couple of months ago. Ventured into Felicity Farseer's system. Then discovered Ganking. I couldn't actually get to Farseer Inc base yesterday as I kept getting killed.

It seems that the devs want to make ganking unrealistically easy - i.e. kill noobs for no reason other than for lols but ban any kind of activity that means they get hunted down such as commander naming on any forum, ever. I get that being a sociopath is part of the gameplay but even in the dystopian Elite universe you would get hunted down by vigilantes sooner or later.

You can switch to Solo mode, if it's an issue.
I don't mind some degree of it, so long as there's an in-game reason, such as you belonging to a rival faction, in which case you bring it on yourself.

In the 'real' universe, yes, but not necessarily in game.... It's a vast expanse of black out there and most players/devs have better things to do than police minor incidents. However, if it becomes a more widespread problem affecting many players, then I imagine something will be done.
Meanwhile, there's nothing stopping you from organising your own Allied force to go take out this Axis of terror yourselves...

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

It's a harsh world out there.. but one you basically opt into by choosing to play in the PvP instance. Unlike Eve, where there isn't any alternative, in Elite you can play in a solo instance or in private group instances.

I just came back to Elite after a 3 year break. Hasn't changed all that much.

I agree with that. I just think that ganking should be a bit more of a PITA for the gankers so it's an occasional annoyance rather than forcing you to go solo to get to a certain location. I believe that it's only ganking if there is no reason for it. i.e. if it's faction related then it's not ganking.

It should indeed... That's why throughout human history, when we have had problems with outlaws, muggers, gangs and all that, we assemble a group of us willing to go out and kick them in the nuts until they stop ganking.... Eventually they came to be known as Law Enforcement.

It's a bit harder to achieve in games, where gankers don't actually die and thus their manpower never runs out, but it can be done...

I don't recognise the system name, but different systems have different levels of law enforcement. To avoid ganking you have to at least keep to the ones with a police presence. Then there are some systems that just seem to be a PVP hotspot, there is one near my home system and I just always relog to Solo when I realise I am there.

The whole combat system goes through annoying phases, not played for a while so don't know what it is like atm. I have an Elite combat rating, so I am expected to deal with high level pirates when in an exploring or merchant vessel that has absolutely no chance against such people, and that's just the NPCs. When mining I found I had to drop into an asteroid belt with no loot on board, pirates would come scan me and then leave me alone whilst I mined. Even in a reasonably kitted Anaconda I found them a pain.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

The pirates while mining is annoying - if you appear in a belt then an NPC ship will always spawn shortly afterwards. At least some of the time it's friendly, but most of the time a pirate. At least now they won't attack you if you don't have anything apart from limpets in your cargo, they just say 'hmm nothing here for me' and leave you alone. Sometimes they follow and check again later.

I've had that - TBH I think that's an important part of the game - If you're on the frontier there will be scum trying to rob you. That's believable. What isn't believable is people will a fortune to dwarf Bill Gates going around in kitted out ships and picking on easy targets and not having anyone or anything go after them making their life difficult.

I think ganking should absolutely be perfectly allowed (as it is) however if anyone opts to murder "innocent" commanders is a high security system and be witnessed by the security services doing it (as they are if you have report crimes against me on) then it would be realistic for security services to actually hunt them down with significant enough resources to track them down and kill them. Not a guaranteed kill - just enough that it takes some real skill and a bit of luck as well to commit murder and get away with it.

To make it more realistic, for those kind of crimes, make the fine a percentage of their assets and wealth rather than fixed fees.

If Bill Gates got an APC and drove around in New York shooting at cars just going about their business, do you think he would last long?

Of course, if he did the same in some very dodgy area of the world, he might well get away with it. Equivalent to a low security system.

Having lots of money and nothing to do with it often results in boredom and errant behaviour... as well as the ability to simply pay off the law.

Understaffed, underpaid, under-resourced, overworked, overstressed and limited by system jurisdiction....

The Cumbria incident lasted quite a few hours, and other similar incidents around the world even longer. Many only concluded when the perp(s) ended their own existence, rather than from any LE actions.

I agree it would be nice to have some level of LE response, but then you'd also be hunted down and killed for comparatively minor infractions, like accidentally clipping an ally in a firefight. I've had one where I smashed into a much smaller ship and outright killed the pilot... That got me very Wanted.
I'd much rather have people accepting deputised LE roles within a certain system, and the authority to group-gank lawbreakers, or something.

But then, this is Elite: DANGEROUS, not Elite: Mildly Unsettling....

It's not exactly dangerous for the gankers though.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

So playing with my new VR headset I dived into a nice gentle High-RES asteroid field yesterday to see if I could remember anything about combat. I was about done before I remembered I had a co-pilot and a fighter bay in the Krait, so clearly I have some way to go

Was a bit disappointed that the game went really jerky after a while in the asteroids, like serious network lag and a few fps sort of bad. it seems fine when I first get into the belt, but after I had cranked up just a couple of mil in bounties things start to stutter. It was doing that when I played before, would have hoped they would have fixed it by now.

Anyone else get this? I think it only does it in VR, and I suspect the devs only use Nvidia cards from some of the grief I have seen in the past so it might be my GPU.
