I thought i'd give it a go anyway yesterday.
Despite not knowing where (or how to find) a combat zone i did find one.
I read in a guide that if your in the eranin region, join the eranin faction or you'll be outnumbered. What i didn't take into account of course is that when i arrived the 2 factions were both eranin factions. I didn't last long

Best to hone your combat skills on the Scenarios. Far cheaper, plus you get to try some of the different weaponry out.
Confirmed: E: D is an online-only game Was kind of hoping the modern elite game would be standalone.
Really, is this an issue? Aren't we all constantly connected these days anyway? I can appreciate some might have been hoping for an offline mode, but realistically the game mechanics aren't really geared towards an offline experience. I'm currently on a 2Mb/s connection and I'm absolutely fine with the decision.
Sadly not.
Yes I understand this too. The downside for me is more about playing the game in years to come, rather than the initial release. A standalone game can be played at my own pace, when I want etc. but an MMO has to be compared to the actions of other people. In E: D, if other players explore the easy to get to systems before I get a chance then they've had an impact on my game (assuming I'll be playing it some years down the line) for eg. - in effect the difficulty/effort level gets set by the community, not my individual preference/circumstances. One of the advantages of stand-alone games is precisely that they can usually be tailored for individual circumstances.I can appreciate some might have been hoping for an offline mode, but realistically the game mechanics aren't really geared towards an offline experience.
Good points kalniel, but if you read the T&C all physical copies of the game will spontaneously combust 3 years after purchase, you are aware playing games older than 3 years is a criminal offence? That's the world we live in now...

Incorrect.
There will be three types of game...
Online Multiplayer: Play online, meet other humans, fight/co-op/trade/whatever.
Online Solo: Play online, encounter only NPCs.
Offline: Play offline.
The reason so much of Elite is online, even in solo, is that the economy is dynamic and the galaxy itself also changes depending on which systems are at war. To get all those updates, changes, events and so on, you do need to be connected. That's just the nature of things, really.
You can still play completely Offline, but you will not benefit from the host of cool things that make the galaxy come alive.
As is, you'll rarely encounter another human player outside of the core systems, as there are 400 billion (yes, billion) systems to explore and space is really really big!!
But if meeting other people really isn't your thing, you can always play Online Solo.
That's not the implication of
The implication there is clearly that some form of server connection, even if only occasional, will be required to play the game,Galaxy, story, missions, have to match, and it does mean the single player has to connect to the server from time to time
I'm still playing the original Elite. What are the chances my (hypothetical) copy of Elite: Dangerous will be able to connect to that server in 30 years time? I'd say pretty low.
The implication is clearly that if I don't connect to that server at some point, I won't be able to play the game. Which is essentially building in planned obsolence to a computer game. Not impressed.
EDIT:
Some more thoughts, having read the newsletter a bit more carefully:
Erm ... why? I'm not exploring it with other people. I want what I explore to be enjoyable. I don't care about what other people are exploring.it is important that what a single player explores matches what other players explore whether single or multiplayer
Again, why? And who is David Braben to tell me what's fundamental to my experience of playing a game? To me, the fundamental for Elite is a good flight, combat and trading experience. Having every other game purchaser affect what happens in my game really isn't fundamental to my experience. In fact, it strikes me as the opposite. If I'm playing a single player game, I don't want the fact that some nupty has decided to, say, trash a space station to impact my game.We have also been able to create a connected experience which lets you play your own story whilst in a dynamic, ever unfolding galaxy that is constantly reacting to what you and every other player is doing .... This has become fundamental to the whole experience
Unsurpringly, the whole thing seems to be Braben saying "Now we've got your money and we've done some work, I've changed my vision, and since Elite is my baby, we're doing it how I want to". That's fine, but he could at least be honest about it, rather than trying to tell me how I want to experience my own free time activities. Just give me the option to play online, in the default universe, with some scripted events to make life interesting. It shouldn't be an insurmountable obstacle to simply save two universe states - offline and online - and let me choose which I want to play in when I start the game. if I choose online then sure, connect to the servers and sync that universe with whatever's happen in the MMO. It's removing the option to just play the game that I disagree with.

Ok, so i've played a bit more and have some more questions. Hope you don't mind :-P
Is the only way to get scenarios/missions on the bullitin board?? There's not an awfull lot of scope and often no military missions.
I was also interdicted on a trade run to Asellus Primus, the attacker fired first (I know sometimes it's a patrol craft) he was also listed as wanted. I managed to shoot him down and was awarded a bounty for doing so, but a bounty was also placed on me?? Brothers of Asellus Primus or some such name. Can someone give me some clues as to what that was about? Are they a military faction trying to take control of that region??
Also, i've been exclusively playing in solo mode. Does it make a difference as to what missions are available in online? And if i go online is every other player going to be trying to kill me?? I thought i'd stay offline while i had small ships and was learning the game. Even took the weapon from my hauler off so i could get greater range. But just upgraded to a Cobra and am toying with the idea of trying it online.
It is not required to play the game.
It is required to download updates of both the evolving in-game changes and the actual game files/patches... but you could probably just carry on playing the unpatched version if you want.
None.
Was the original Elite billed as being updated regularly with new content?
And it's not like any other game has ever done this before, is it... nope.
Because the vast majority of offline players will still demand that they get all these things in the offline mode, even if FD only come up with them several years after the initail release and will probably whine like crazy when they don't/can't have them?
Err... It's his game, not yours.
That's pretty much it in a nutshell, really.
As to why - The sheer volume of data for 400 billion star systems needs a large server. I doubt that it would all fit on the average player's hard drive and limiting the game to those with their own server would be stupid.
Then go make your own game all about that, then.
I don't mean to sound facetious, but you donated money so FD could make the game the game as they intended. Not you, not me and not some clueless profit-hungry publisher. That was it and that's what we're getting.
That last part is pretty much how they've been playing it all along.
OK, which events would you like?
What about Bob, Jim, Andy, Susan, Jemima, Helen, Peter, Jorg, Terry and the thousands of other people who don't like your events, or want the same but each with one or two differences?
You gonna demand separately scripted games for all of them as well?
Or are you going to join some of their ranting forumites and call the FBI on them?
As explained in the link from the other thread, no-one has said it's impossible at all. It is, however, such an involved thing, it would basically be two separate games, for which they don't have the time, funding, resources or care.
The primary brief has always been the online multiplayer and solo versions.

At the minute, yes.
There are some missions for the military, but they're not always obvious. Usually you're taking out some civillians for one of the governments.
More likely a political faction. If you kill one of theirs, they get upset about it.
On one of the right panel screens, you'll find your reputation and how you're viewed by the various factions. Some will like you, others may not.
Not that I've noticed.
Remember though, that this is still Beta and at each new release they nerf some things to direct your focus onto others. Last one, they nerfed trading and missions were THE thing for making money. This time it seems to be mining and a bit of piracy/interdiction.
Right now, it would happen perhaps a little more than usual as we're testing the interdiction modules.
So far, though, I've barely even spoken with other players. I've shot two or three at most. Once you move away from the starting systems, you'll see them less and less anyway. Space is, like, really really big and all!
Good news is that, if they do randomly attack you, they'll get a big fat bounty on their heads and another if they actually kill you!
You get a free Sidewinder if you die, but even if you buy a better ship and outfit it, so long as you keep enough money aside, you'll be able to buy a replacement at the time, too.
You have a Cobra??!!
Get online and kill summat!!
Maybe take some combat missions and get in practice beforehand, then go seeking players at the Nav Beacons or in conflict zones. Make sure you have the money to buy back the ship and kit if you do kark it and just go have some fun!
