Elite Dangerous is currently at £9.59 for the Commander Deluxe Edition (Base Game + Horizons Season Pass + Commander Pack) until the 20th (if you only need a part of it instead, there are also individual reductions).

Might finally get around to Horizons. Maybe the game will stop being Euro Truck Simulator in Space then.
You don't have to play with other players, you can play in your own instance rather than playing in open. I have played the game mostly like that, apart from times when I have been playing in a group of friendly players.
Some of the sights in the game are quite spectacular, and you can get to Elite status just from exploring.
I really need to get back into Elite but I feel X4 at xmas will take that time away.
Just bought the foundations expansion so will have a look at that later. I have a rift headset so will give that a go with it as well.

If you like space and exploring space, yes.
It might get a bit boring after a few months of scanning planets, flying around nebulae, and so on... and you'll obviously still need to spend some time learning the basics, but there are plenty of other things to explore and mysteries to solve planet-side, as well. Break this up with mining, trading, haulage and passenger missions, or whatever.
As mentioned, you can play solo, but you'll still get the occasional NPC taking a few shots at you or trying to steal your cargo, until you star venturing outside the bubble of inhabited space...
Also the full game, including horizons (which brings you fully up to date) is less than £10 until the 20th Dec, so there's really no excuse.
This is half the price it's been in previousl sales so far, so best price yet.
Slippery slope though. I didn't get on with using the game controller I had, so went for a HOTAS flight stick which made a huge difference to the game. Then I got a decent deal on the VR headset which made a huge difference to playing the game. Graphics card wasn't quite fast enough, so that got updated. Is it just me where this game has cost a fortune? Still, the fact I wore out the first HOTAS stick when it only got used playing Elite shows I have had a huge number of game hours out of it
So.... after being a Kickstarter backer all that time ago I'm finally going to actually put some time into playing this over the festive break. Any protips for getting started?
Do all the tutorials. The advanced combat tutorial is hard, I'm combat elite and I tried it last night and failed on first attempt
Edit: I take breaks from the game, and it feels like every time I come back a lot has changed. Still there has always been a golden rule that I'm sure still applies:
Any ship you buy has a kind of insurance excess that you have to pay if you get it destroyed. If you can't cover the insurance cost, buy a cheaper ship and fly that until you can afford it again else you can lose everything and end up back in a Sidewinder.

Not had chance as yet, possibly later today - I'll have a go at finding my way on my own first, might reach out if I get stuck!
NP. Getting the hang of basic flight controls and trading is a must. Then I found I struggled to get anywhere because I couldn't afford to upgrade my frame shift drive. That's probably the point when you want a bit of a leg-up, unless you want to feel you did everything on your own
ISTR the system I started in was a pain to fly around as some of the stations were half an hour real time of flying to get to, so might be worth checking out missions to nearby systems. There are Elite trading websites too to help you find good trade routes.
I will be on and off the game today. Check out the Discord server thread as well, my Discord username isn't the same as on here it is my Elite username so I am easy to find to ping questions to, I'm the one playing Elite
As someone who bought E yonks ago and quickly got bored, does the expansion add much in the way of things to do? I know it adds more ships and components but that's all for nothing if it's still Space Trucking Simulator.
