Sidewinder - quick, fairly agile but no real heavy offence or defence for that matter.
Eagle - lightweight fighter, bit quicker and more agile than Sidewinder, brilliant canopy visibility, 3 hard points. Very weak though, and super limited jump range at the moment.
Hauler - slowish, and very weak offensively. Ideal smuggling ship.
Cobra - do it all ship. 4 hard points, decent shields and good pace.
Viper - Heavy fighter. Crazy fast (500 on boost), turns like an angry terrier and has 4 hard points. Only 8 cargo and limited jump range.
Type 6 - Medium Freighter, fairly sluggish but huge jump range and lots of space for goods
Type 9 - biggest ship you can currently fly, crazy expensive and armoured like a tank. Loads of cargo room, but no agility whatsoever.
Anaconda - Even more crazy expensive, but loads of hard points and can be kitted out with some of the biggest weaponry for dishing out a serious smack down. Not particularly manoeuvrable but still loads of cargo space, the Anaconda is the large scale 'do it all' ship

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Took a video of the new cannon build, and by 'eck it's daft. It's uploading to Youtube at the moment, might be a while since it's 13mins long (whole mission) and about 4GB. Still, pretty good vid if I do say so myself. Might annotate it at some point to describe a little more about what I was doing.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Scary thing is because the fighters are so small, perhaps only one or two rounds are actually landing. When you fight something a bit bigger, all four land and the extra strength of the salvo negates the strength of the bigger ship. Perhaps I'll take a video at the High Intensity area of Eranin 2 to demonstrate that.

Cool video Lowe. But one thing that gets me, is where do you all find out where you can buy stuff? Whenever I am docked somewhere and think about upgrading guns, ships, ets, it's never in stock at that location and I can't see a way in game to find out where it's stocked.

Like that build, where do you buy those cannons?

Think logically Allen. Head for the high tech worlds - Asellus for example is where I get most of the tasty kit. Anywhere that specialises in high tech commodities will have a good supply of top tier weaponry.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Have they nerfed it already? Got myself a Cobra Mk. III (thanks to the discount), fit 4 x C2 Canons, went out and couldn't kill a thing... Tracked one enemy fighter in my crosshairs whilst he was about 10m away, hit him with two salvo's, didn't even scratch his shields!

Then again, it could be related to poor internet tonight. I hope that despite being on solo play a poor internet connection doesn't result in laggy gameplay, but I saw none of the "OP" stuff you had in your video.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

Cobra doesn't work well with cannon. The wing hard points are spaced a long way apart and so when you get close the convergence works against you. One of the wing points will always miss. Best off with gimballed stuff on the wing points and cannon on the centre ones.

    Re: Elite : Dangerous

So are there plenty of safeish system to do trading runs and build up your credits then? Or is there always the risk of pirates (which I guess will only increase in online play)? If it's just a question of run between two safe system raking in the cash, I can't see that being sustainable in a theoretically dynamic market.

Bleurgh, don't have time for Elite! Damn you all and you cool videos and sneak peaks. Have to say the game is already looking awesome though - everything I always wanted the original Elite to be, and fairly true to the original. I loved the sequence where you flew around the big ship during the dogfight, Lowe - truly epic stuff....

The trick is to keep the range to about 500m or less, but no less than 100 unless you're in a Viper or something with very close hardpoints. Cannons don't work at range, but up close they hit like a mule.

There are safeish systems to do trading runs yes, but don't forget you can take advantage of the political situations as well, currently there's a war brewing between two worlds, so supplies of weapons to both sides are going down rather well... The markets are dynamic yes, but that just encourages you to explore and find new routes rather than grinding the same old stuff over and over.

If you enjoyed the big ship stuff I'll make sure in the next vid I do a bit more flying around it and through it. Got one more to put up before then, fairly short but shows what happens when you occidentally hit boost with flight assist off just as you're about to land... :S
