I find that its possible to play in short bouts, especially if you are chasing pirates. I quiet often do a quick 30 min session and finish by cashing in the bounty's. I tried upgrading ships too quickly, a reasonably well kitted out sidewinder is better than a poorly equipped Viper.
Best advice is to get a kill warrant scanner early on, and if you intending to stay put in one system (plenty of places to hunt) try and find one with a station to claim warrants, and an independent one to clear your wanted status without getting shot at by the police, also a resource extraction site helps for finding pirates.
Explain what exactly? The Beta, the game, what is it you want us to tell you about that hasn't already been covered in this thread.
If all you want is for someone to explain just "What is Elite Dangerous?" then clickety click on the link here.
I have only the 1 and even then merely 1080p.
Slopey's web page seems to be down at the moment anyway, so it can wait... especially as I need to put some better kit and armour on that million-credit space cow!!
When you die, you end up at the Insurance page, where there are three basic options:
1/. Start again with a free (loaned*) Sidewinder at whichever base you first started at.
2/. Rebuy your old ship, at the last place you docked.
3/. Rebuy your old ship and any/all the upgrades you just lost, back at the last place you docked.
You usually lose any cargo, bounty vouchers, combat bonds and exploration data, but your balance should still be there, I believe.
I'd have to check, as I've not taken it myself, but Option 1 might be a complete financial restart (as in a ship, a handful of credits and that's it) while retaining your rep/criminal status (wiping that requires a complete restart from the main menu).
I also seem to recall there being a Declare Bankruptcy option, which might account for losing everything...?
Failing that, you have a loan limit of 200,000 Cr with the insurance company.
If the cost of replacing your ship is more than 200,000 and you don't have enough money to do it even with that loan, then your only option is to take that Free Sidewinder and start all over again with 1,000 Cr.
Moral of ^that one is to always keep enough Cr in your account to rebuy your current ship + kit. You can open the Right UI and see the Rebuy Cost at any time.
*10% of all your income from restart onward will be automatically decucted until you have repaid the cost of the loan ship and equipment.
1.04 is out.
update 1.04 is incoming and everyone will be removed from the server at 2.30 pm GMT while we apply the update and make the new client available. Here is the change log for the update:
- If a station somehow loses it's parent then move it to another body so players at that station can load
- Prevent inconsistencies between client and server in which parts of a sector are and are not occupied
- Some fixes to meta-data that were being disguised by an issue with inconsistent generation
- When deciding if we should go hostile to a faction we just shot, consider whether the target has a local bounty rather than a bounty with their own faction. Prevent people being attacked by the police after attack nearby wanted targets
- Fix only the first consequence being applied to the universe state when completing a mission
- Set killer before we do ship death - fixes problem with players not getting bounties or reputation when they kill other players by breaking critical modules
- Reduce likelihood of server disconnects from stellar forge server queries
- Fix mouse control if galaxy map opened with key binding when in outfitting
- Updated exoplanets Kepler 438 b and 442 b
- Add produced by and consumbed by information to all trade goods (except rares)
- Telemetry added to try and figure out why some machines are failing to load resource files
- Remove the terraforming data for Pareco system causing an assert
- Fix packet loss statistics
- Use the correct absolute magnitude in bolometric luminosity calculations
- Various text fixes
There are some online changes as well which Andy will post in his update, but one change is worth mentioning here - there should be an improvement in matchmaking that should mean you are more likely to see other players if they are in the same region as you.

Got an email today asking if the address on my account is still good for my physical KS rewards, so it sounds like they'll ship soon enough
I have discovered how to find that elusive second ship that I was struggling to find before.
On the Galaxy map when you look at a system where you have a ship docked waiting to be used there will be a ship symbol displayed next to the system name, then when you go into the system map you will be able to see what space station or platform that ship is docked at.
Really enjoying bounty hunting just now. I have seen some interesting stuff like a funeral procession and a wedding barge.
Flew past Ronnie Osullivan and Dave Lister as well tonight.

So police won't attack they get in my line of fire?
It only tells you which System, not where in the system the ship is docked. To do that, you need to look in the system map, but also, as I've said above, when you are looking through your galaxy map if you see a ship symbol next to a system you are likely to be jumping to, it will mean that you have a ship there that you might have forgotten about.
