Yeah, I know. Learning not to trust just the luminance highlight review, as one or two primary colours can be blown out but not the third meaning it doesn't show up as peak white.
I think I still need to work on my exposure. Using matrix works most of the time, but here, the thin strip of white shirt was "outnumbered" by the dark jacket. I would have changed to spot metering to get an accurate meter and then compose accordingly, but I hadn't taken the time to learn the controls fast enough and in a moment of panic, decided to take the shot without adjusting in case he changed his facial expression by the time I'd sorted my clumsiness out.
Oh well, next time
tfboy you using a d300 right?
if you haven't already try turning on ADR that might help from blowing white shirts/dresses etc...
Thanks for the tip. It was my second outing with the d700. I don't know if there's a way of preventing any blowing white 100%. If I did some spot metering on his shirt, it would have been OK. I just need to get more practice and better at changing settings quickly.
I could try some features such as ADR, but then I know I'd forget to turn it off at some point where it would have a detrimental affect on the photo I want to get. Swings and roundabouts
its worth a playing about with. The ADR is the only feature i can see myself using when i upgrade the rest of the d-lighting features are fine if your a jpeg shooter.

The pic is actually upside down and it is on a glass spherical lampshade about the size of a basketball, so I stood on my bed and took a load with the flash firing upwards at it.
Really cool shots there, Clunk
got myself a nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens the other day but haven't really had time to play with it properly so here is a quick shot.
