i say go for dslr when the prices have gone down to around the same price of film ones .. i.e £200 -£300 for a really good one ... like the canon 300d .. very good though

Lo guys
I've decided to part with my Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM lens + Hoya HMC UV filter + EW-73B hood - This lens has been used less than a few weeks (owned for about a month sitting in a DryZone bag) and the UV filter n' Hood are brand spankin' new.
This will go up on eBay soon and I'll link back here when done. Thanks
wondered if i could trouble you guys. im thinking of trading in my trusty eos 600 and getting onw of these new fangled eos 350d's. a friend is going to hong kong in a week and should be able to pick one up for a very good price. as far as i know digicams can be upto 60% cheaper than here, dunno about a dslr, but still a good discount should be there.
so... my question is: are they reliable?
warranty will only be vaild in hong kong, in the event of a complete disaster my uncle lives there so i could post it to him to sort out, but this is obviously not ideal. do they go wrong often, my eos 600 lasted 15 years before any problems!
if you treat it right it should last you I wouldnt buy a 350D blind though, they are very small so unless you KNOW you'll get along with the size, dont risk it. go to a shop like jessops and have a play with one
Tom.
I like the duality of Digital and Film, so have just gone and bought an EOS33 Film Camera, intending to buy a 20D when i have some more cash (can use the same lenses). For my standard work i'm pretty happy with my Panasonic Lumix FZ20, it has a fantastic lens, but lots of drawbacks that having a DSLR would fix. I hate the EVF as in low-light conditions you cant see a thing. Might post a small article on it up here if i get round to it.
cheers guys. thanks for the advice.
im coming from an eos 600 which is a 15yr old big heavy slr which i love the feel of, but im sure i could get used to the smaller 350d as i used a AE-1 for many years and that was tiny. but i will go to jessops to have a look, thats a good plan. i was tempted by the nikon d50 but then i have a few lenses already for my canon so it seems silly to change.
reliability isnt an issue then as long as i treat it well i take it.
noah
you will find the 350d is far superior to the 50d...in virtually every way. and being in the eos line up is no bad thing either.
@andy - I can see where you're comin from on the duality between film/digital. certainly effective with canon's line up at the moment. get yourself some top quality glass ("L"?) and use it for bodies that come by your way...its such a simple system thats adopted by the whole range its strange why i see so many people chucking their film bodies...
heathens!

I have to say, I do keep drooling over the 350D, but I know it's pointless as my 300D is only about a year old, and I'd have to re-buy all the accessories which only fit the 300D.. (extra batteries, battery-grip, etc etc).
I still need to buy a nice wide-angle lens, and possibly a mid-range zoom..

how about the tamron lenses. there's the one thats as good as the 24-70 L from canon, think its a 28-75mm. can't go too wrong with that range I hear.
similarly for wide angle try out (if you can stretch to it) any lens around 17-35mm range.
canon do a 16-35 and a 17-40, sigma do a 17-35 (the one I have, its nice )
the smaller sensor on the dslr's at the moment is a little bit of a niggle to me, I have a nice range of lenses from wide to telephoto but if I were to want the same 'reach' as my film body with a digital one I would have to get 'even wider angle' lenses. that said i really see the value of dslr's...as a film user myself I can't wait for a larger sensor to trickle down the scale, otherwise I'm in for an expensive time!

Canon do a 10-22mm ef-s lens
I'm quite tempted by the canon 60mm ef-s macro lens too..
Then I also need a flashgun of some sort..
