    Re: Religion to be extinct

An Religious Education teacher in the same school as me seems to think sicence has proved lots of things "God" claimed to have done wrong.

However, I don't think it would be too bad if religion was forgotten about completely. Don't get me wrong, I respect the view of people who are religious but, I for one, am not. I reckon people just rely and depend on religion too much.

Yes but if there is no religion we will all have to decide what we atheists should call ourselves. Lets hope the flying spaghetti monster will save us from such folly.

    Re: Religion to be extinct

Decades of census data, alongside a mathematical model, suggest religion in nine secular countries is being driven to extinction.
That and the fact it's all about the worshipping of an imaginary friend...
(why is their not a 'religeon' based on eg pay it forward or plain family values without all the other gubbins of who's got the best imaginary god?)

As for daytime running lights - it's a silly proposition - if it's dark grey cloud, plus rain then that's nothing to do with "day time lights" it's sensible to then put lights on (ie the conditions dictate the use of them)... as a motorcyclist it's a personal choice to switch your lights on or not in daytime and have some pillock think you are flashing them (bikes bounce more).

edit: Volvo's idea is to be seen, but then if all lights are on in the day, that's the norm and the crowd and you filter it out (again if dark/rain - that dictates use).

I see the bible as a book of Chinese whispers, i am sure a man like Jesus existed and I am sure he was a very talented man in what he could do, but as the story of him was told & spread people added their own bits to it. End result is what we see in the Bible today.
As a believer, don't you believe that the word of God is protected from distortion?

    Re: Religion to be extinct

Short of a dictator taking control of the whole earth and systematically execute all believers of any faith with no resistance whatsoever, I suspect that religion will only become extinct moments before, or at the same time as humankind (depending on whether the last human alive is religious or not).

To be a Christian is to believe the Bible, to believe Christ is both the Son of God and yet God, died and was resurrected, and whose death is the payment for our sins. To change that is to render Christianity meaningless. It can be found in any of the more orthodox Christian writings summarised as the Apostles Creed.

You've made a mistake in saying you don't take the Bible literally. Why? Because the Bible is not written in one form. It has poetry & songs (Psalms), history (many books), wisdom and advice (eg Proverbs), revelation, prophecy etc. It should NOT be understood as one genre, since it clearly isn't written as such. any more than any other piece of literature. Some parts are absolutely written to be understood literally, some parts as figurative, etc

    Genres here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_genre

have a lookee here for some aspects of the book: http://www.godandscience.org/apologe...henticity.html

I read a quote from someone sometime long ago :

"If God hadn't already existed, Man (Woman) would have invented Him (Her) "

I like Voltaire's quote that is it better to believe in god because there might be an after life than to not believe in one and guarantee there will not be one.

This isn't meant to be a lets all poke fun at creationists, that's what the natural history museum (ironically) is for.

This thread shouldn't be a find holes in the bible thread either.

Its more about societies trend towards religion. I like TeePees suggestion that the internets can provide people with social groups that are a better match of like minded types etc.

    Re: Religion to be extinct

I was reading a local newspaper this morning, and I told me about Barrack Obama 'banning' the National Prayer Day in the US for Christians, but not for any other religious beliefs. Could this just be a story of us colinising religion groups because of their beliefs? It may not be science stopping people becoming religious in there own way, but us stopping them instead?

    Re: Religion to be extinct

    A myth, of course.

A big part of the reluctance to give up outdated beliefs is that many Christians see science as an attack on their lifestyle. If it were just about belief, christians would be some of the first to learn about science as a way of questioning what they believe. The reality is that most christians simply don't understand scientific reasoning, and have no desire to learn. They'll then argue against evolution by saying it's only a theory, and then complain about it all being random. I'm sure we've all seen the recent study which showed atheists were the most knowledgeable about religion.

Christians see an attack on their beliefs as an attack on their entire lifestyle. If changing what they believe means changing their friends, activities and all the rest then you can expect reluctance to try to understand why.

Christians disagree with your statement about Christians.

Christians were some of the first to learn about science and explore how the world works. Most Christians do understand scientific reasoning and do have a desire to learn more about the world. No Christian I have ever met has argued against evolution.
