I agreed with most of your post except that. It really gets my back up whenever anyone says this is a "christian nation", especially when you've just given examples of 2 holidays that are NOT christian in origin. The British Isles have been inhabited much longer than the supposed 2000 year old religion. To me British culture IS a multi-Culture, what makes it so rich is that is is composed of so many different things from many different origins, there has NEVER been any time in British history when Britain was entirely of one people from one origin.

Man I cant believe some of the comments that I have read on here.

This started off as a question of culture, not religion, then soon enough someone starts bringing in religion into it. What have muslims got to do with the erosion of British culture?

Rather than speaking on our behalf or sourcing your arguments from biased media broadcasts, why dont you ask us yourself?

I am a British Muslim. I love being British and Britain should be run the way the BRITISH people feel it should be run. Although I dont celebrate Christmas or Easter, I love walking home from work and seing the beautifull decorations on other peoples houses. Christmas gives a boring year a nice buzz. I even buy my colleagues christmas cards, but oh no we muslims want the UK to be under Sharia Law. What a load of crap. Our Prophet PBUH, told us that what ever country that we live in, we have to abide by their laws, enough said.

The only people that are eroiding British culture are the ingorant ones who are afraid to stand up. If the goverment tells you that you cant have a St Georges flag outside your house, tell them to pi$$ off.

Government policy is not about pleasing the majority or minorities, its to fullfill their own secular ways. Viva La Revolucion, fight for your beliefs/views, what ever they maybe.

    A muslim.

Exactly, brilliant post. Agreed with everything. Sometimes the most patriotic thing you can do is oppose the government. It does seem to be them that are really eroding whatever we call British culture.

I'm definitely with you on the "christian nation" thing. How many people who class themselves as "Christian" actually go to church regularly, or follow any Christian principles? Religion, if one chooses to follow one, is imho a way of life not a team to be supported when trouble arises.

For myself I prefer not to follow any 'organised' religion. Many religious texts, when read critically, are full of inconsistencies and when taken in the context of the period they were actually written are little more than propaganda.

As for ‘Britishness’, how can that be defined? I consider myself Welsh before British and Wales has it’s own culture and language – does that make me less British because I can speak two languages? England is a mixture of cultures from various invaders before immigration is even taken into account.

As for the British following local customs abroad! That’s a laugh when you consider our time in India, Africa, etc. The only thing I can think of that defines ‘Britishness’, is our ability to adapt well to changes, our sense of fairness, the way we get on with life when faced by 30 years of IRA terrorism and our sheer bloody-mindedness not to act like sheep when we think our government is wrong.

At this time too many seem willing to give up civil liberties in exchange for a false sense of security. The biggest threat to our culture is the Americanisation that has taken it over. How many people were shown running and screaming in utter panic when the London bombing happened? The government’s actions since then have, in my opinion, allowed the terrorists to gain their objective. We have had to accept restrictions and changes the way we live and our population is effectively divided. That, for me, is one Americanisation too far.

true786: Well said! That's a truly British attitude.

political correctness, as we now hear about it DAILY, really got going not even 7-8 years ago. Taking into account the actual hours politicians put into their jobs, i rekon its going to be atleast another 8 years before they figure out where the limits are.
Just over compensating arent they. to bring the global stereotype of UK towards a more, desired view.

Its a shame, I just think that they push the blame on to minorities too much, just so they can give the majority someone to blame rather than the governments themselves.

I am British born but my parents are immigrants. Do I worry about immigration? Yes of course.

Guy Fawkes was a religious extremist who merely wanted to swap Protestant supremacy for Catholic tyranny. While I'm a fan of Alan Moore, he was more than a bit off-base there.

But TBH all you Anglo-Saxon immigrants need to stop complaining and learn about real English culture. You can start by listening to the Beatles in Cornish .

No. To be English as it is today is because of the Anglo-Saxons, Normans and Anglo-Normans. The Celts aren't English, there was no concept of an English nation when they were knocking about.

Anyway, rather than listening to the Beatles in Cornish, just go to Wales. They have many hills. Some of them quite green I'm told; green hills and sheep aplenty. What more could a man need?

So you're suggesting that the very concept of 'Englishness' is merely the result of foreign immigrants seeking a way of consolidating their rule over the native inhabitants of this country? Ah, now I get it!
