I still have a black screen with 3 lines of text talking about the recovery console, and a C:\> command prompt.

but i hear no noise from the computer, apart from the fan, it doesnt sound like it is doing anything. should i type EXIT and restart?

SPTD is part of DT's, it is likely that it is conflicting with something. What other peripherals are plugged in.

plugged in USBs i have an old printer, HP 5150, old scanner HP 5400, an IPOD cable and a Mobile Phone cable for updating my phone.

Obviously i have a monitor, keyboard+mouse and speakers as well.

I typed exit, and the computer restarted,

when restarted it went through the old cycle and blue screened and restarted.

What am i meant to be doing with this recovery repair install, it didnt do anything, did i miss something?

No. pretty certain deamon tools wasnt running.

I guess firstly you should disconnect all peripherals apart from keyboard mouse and try booting in safe mode.

Can I repair / reinstall windows without losing all my stored data / programs?

I've flicked through that forum and they are having similar problems, but i dont know and am not confident in changing things without first going into windows.
