well slimserver / squeezebox are my choices in the house and and Iriver modded with Rockbox is my choice when walking about - all run FLAC which has no DRM restrictions and is as high quality as the original sound.

At least last time I checked, the iPod was about the cheapest player I could find for the same price range.
And the build quality and customer support was probably better than other brands that were selling at that price.
And as people have mentioned before, Winamp + Plugin would probably be your best option
If you use linux, try amarok. I started using it yesterday and I've honestly never used a better audio player on any platform before. It will also transfer songs to an ipod for you.
