Re: HOWTO: get Vista Service Pack 1 - right now..

It may initially be slower for two reasons:

    1. the indexing thingummy is going to be a bit busy for a couple of days.

    2. your drive is probably well fragmented post install.

I did a major defrag from another partition to sort it out. It's no slower than before now (36 hours later).

Hmmm I just had to reactivate mine due to 'hardware changes'. It then said it was already in use and I had to call the automonkey activation phone line to sort it.

Not sure if it relates to sp1 though.

Re: HOWTO: get Vista Service Pack 1 - right now..

Tried it on my new HTPC setup, was worried as it mentioned a beta version but followed through with a full SP1 update. Running smoothly so far, only set this up yesterday so indexing is still going like mad.

I've had the beta version for awhile on my m1330 due to sleep mode problems, hopefull will revert to a old backup and then update that too. seems like microsoft may have learnt from the XP SP2 nightmare.

Re: HOWTO: get Vista Service Pack 1 - right now..

My question is, will service pack 1 make me want to install Vista?

I have it lying around, I used it for a month and it cheesed me right off with various problems so I went back to XP with the intention of using it again when it was a bit more stable.

That would depend on what the various problems you were having were, I guess. I don't think too many people are having stability issues - most so far seem to be application compatibility and the dreaded slow file copy issue.

Just got round to a defrag. I have practically nothing on the Vostro atm, so it took no time but it soon sorted any lag out. Back to normal.

Has anyone seen much improvement in file copying with sp1? a fix for this issue alone would make me upgrade.

Going off what I've just seen on a Gateway laptop, I would say it was well worth giving SP1 a shot, whether you get this, or wait for the official roll out.

I use directory opus for file management anyway - but on systems without it i've still not seen the file copy problems(!).

I had internet problems that were in part due to IPv6, I also had issues with my GFX card. Not the drivers but the software suite for NVIDIA, took an absolute age to load and would frequently crash. IE frequently crashed to.

Also dark engine games don't work under vista, or at least I wasn't able to get them to work...

Another factor at the time was virus guard but thats not an issue anymore since I get Mcafee provided by O2.

The progress box that popped up when I began copying a series of files (around 32 gig in total) from an external HDD attached via the USB (2.0) port to the internal HDD told me it would take 2 days 3 hours and XX minutes to copy.

Copying from a USB stick to the HDD takes a while too, heck, even moving a file from one directory to another on the same HDD takes an age.

Just as an update - I restored to the backup I took before running the reghack and manually ran it, then set Kaspersky to not scan SSL connections temporarily. Windows Update now runs a treat, so I can only guess that something odd was going on.

Moral of the story is always have a backup to hand, I guess

The new UI style for some elements of the sound control panel is nicer, have they improved sound quality too? I swear sound quality has improved!

Also the wifi performance is better too, now able to constantly max my 20MB connection, before it was between 2 and 2.2.

I installed the standalone 434MB version of RTM and it took around 30 mins to install on my 4GB quad core comp.

I chucked it on last night and I'm yet to have a problem. HDD was going a bit mad whilst the indexing steadied itself, but overall things are looking good.

General Windows browsing definitely feels a bit nippier than pre-SP1 which is always a good thing :]
