Re: Vista and Windows 7 - reactions

Steam worked perfectly for me with no problems at all.
I haven't tried Daemon Tools but I used MagicDisk and MagicIso and those both seemed to cause a little trouble - however, IT IS A BETA OS, of course its not going to be perfect.

edit: Uninstalling MagicDisk and MagicIso fixed my problems with WMP12.

Wish there was a way to get 'recently added' back to the navigation pane like in WMP11

It's generally not the fault of the OS though. If a driver installer makes a call for a operating system it recognises, then the chances are that it won't install correctly on an OS it doesn't recognise. Setting the compatibility mode to Vista often lets it fudge it's way around though.

The drivers and programs themselves will likely be entirely compatible, as the driver model hasn't changed in any major way, unlike from XP to Vista, where there were substantial improvements (read dangel's post for that).

Re: Vista and Windows 7 - reactions

I'm testing 7 on two different machines at the moment, and so far so good. Like most people say, it feels faster than Vista.

I am glad MS seem to have paid more attention to detail, such as making it easier to connect to a wireless network.

It's still not perfect and I hope they do take on-board all the feedback testers are providing, but I have to say I will almost certainly get it as soon as it is released.

Good stuff - as for daemon that's BSOD enough XP systems for me because of bugs so i'm not entirely convinced they always get things right Big fan nonetheless tho and yes i need it to work too - i'll try installing it sometime soon.

Skype does'nt wanna work for me unders win 7. I have installed the Beta to try and resolve and thats even worse! There is no text visible at all in any windows !

Overall though I am liking it. It runs really well on my D630 laptop

Re: Vista and Windows 7 - reactions

I ended up rolling back to my Vista backup yesterday - I finally got around to installing Football Manager 2009 from Steam and the activation DRM does not play nicely with Windows 7. I've submitted a report to Sega on the matter but don't expect it to be resolved any time soon (ie prior to Win7's release)

Other than that I found that networking on VMWare Server doesn't play nicely either: I must remember to submit a bug to VMWare for that.

Re: Vista and Windows 7 - reactions

All my benchmarks are better in Windows 7, perhaps its because i only use it for testing and so there isnt much going on in the background, but i get 300-400 more points in Vantage and about the same in 3Dmark 06.

Re: Vista and Windows 7 - reactions

It all depends on what you personally like, thats all...

If you like OSX than use it, if you like 2000 than use it, if you like Unix than use it. Fanboyism is just another way for people to not make these decisions for their own selves. Massing their ignorance as a large group makes them hard to take down, and makes the fanboy feel more secure with their decisions which most of their decisions are not actually their own, rather it lays on the influences they get.

I've used Vista for 2 years now, and enjoy using it (with tweaks [UAC disabled, Shell Themes]). I really think that UAC is the biggest downfall of Vista and is what initially turned people off to vista. Its kinda like giving a kid a go cart, but the go cart has a installed rev limiter to keep it under 2kph, who wants that?

    My opinion is like this..
I have grown accustomed to the dimensions within Vista, which is tiny however it makes it feel like there is more depth or dimension to your desktop with the eye candy Aero/Longhorn that XP doesn't feature. Looking at XP now compared to 5 years ago is hard to do once spoiled by Vista. XP is a very bleak and flat interface with nothing fancy. Things are harder to locate, take forever to search and generally waste my time more than Vista. One of my all time favorite things in Vista is being able to hit the start key on my keyboard and start typing what I want and before I even see it displayed I can hit enter and bam.. [Start]["clac"][enter] done.

I really don't enjoy using XP anymore, my interest in the OS has fallen drastically. It just isn't 'fun' to use XP anymore, yes it's a workhorse, but it lacks the interesting tidbits of Longhorn/Eyecandy.

So far the only thing I have noticed different about 7000 is the startbar or superbar, which in reality you can change Vista to match 7000 with simple GUI themes and already built in Vista hidden features.

I will not buy a copy of 7000 and I will stick to Vista, due to the fact that their is no major difference.

Maybe if they came out with a new file system or maybe a new GUI, but thats about it, thats all that is important to me, If it aint broke dont fix it.

I'll stick to using VMWare if I want to explore 7000.

Re: Vista and Windows 7 - reactions

Ive installed Win7 on my Acer Aspire One, with a mere 1.5gb ram it runs effing amazingly!.. smoother than ubuntu and XP, and with better battery life too!

I also have X64 installed on my main desktop dualbooting with vista... i like the concept of the new taskbar and how it can intergrate IE errrm IE8 lol - being able to choose what tab you want from the button, and the button fills up green when downloading, but its not perfect.. MSN messenger for instance by "default" shows as having two windows stacked.. id also like to be able to separate out the conversations as it takes a few seconds longer to switch to the active convo in 7 because of the extra click and selection.

Re: Vista and Windows 7 - reactions

Running 32bit on my Sammy netbook and it looks good and runs smoothly.

I've put 64bit on my main desktop and same initial reactions.

But these are fresh intalls and we all know how much smoother a machine runs when it's clean, so I'll reserve judgement until I've caused it some stress (and me probably) with some heavy apps/games

Running the intalls on neighbouring partitions with clean intalls of XP is a great way of directly comparing performance (allowing for the odd driver differences/bugs).

I realise it's dangerously offtopic, but you're wrong. UAC was one of the best features of Vista but it was badly received because too many peopel have been used to the security model which they have used for years where all users and apps run with root level privileges. Yes, it's Microsoft's fault that they allowed this practise to go on as long as they did but finally they do something about it and people turn it off? Now *that's* progress, people.

Seriously, running stuff under the model of least privilege is the way to do it.
