The automatic installation of drivers is still the same afaik - first check online for latest version if available, then check the local ("in box") driver store.
It doesn't trawl the whole disk or other partitions for possible drivers to my knowledge (that would be a very slow process and very rarely useful - plus tricky to handle situations where multiple driver files might be present in sub folders).

I too was impressed with how smooth the installation went on my home rig, only the RAID controller driver (which I don't use) doesn't have an immediately available driver.

I've also had use of the "check for solutions" feature in Vista, where missing drivers are later added to the store and the system provides the link to download them directly from the manufacturer (e.g. Intel).

    nope,

you can use any drivers on windows 7, even if they are for win xp or vista.. on the system im running i got mostly vista drivers, how ever the printer im using doesnt have vista driver so i installed xp one and everythign works

you dont need to bother with drivers is because 7 has got a huge database off them already installed

This isn't correct. Windows 7 in all most all cases work with Vista drivers, but XP is very unlikely.
I just tried to force install XP drivers for a few pieces of hardware under Windows 7 and it wasn't having it, so you certainly can't use "any drivers" under Windows 7.

As for your printer - Either you can still use older drivers for printers on W7, the drivers are mislabelled, or it's actually using an inbuilt one despite what you've asked it.

    http://blogs.computerworld.com/why_x...love_windows_7

One of the biggest complaints that XP users had with Windows Vista was its hardware incompatibilities. Older printers, scanners, network cards, and other peripherals simply didn't work with Vista. Here's the bad news: They won't work in Windows 7, either, because Windows 7 uses the same driver model as Windows Vista. So XP users will be out of luck.

Again, this is not the case. Windows 7 like all other previous Windows OS will include drivers that are usually 'OS startup' ones. For example, you're missing most of the stuff out of the nVidia driver suite if you just use the default Windows 7 driver. Update your drivers to the latest one like you would on any other Windows OS, do not stick with the default shipping ones if there is ones available from the manufacturer.

Windows 7 RC 64-bit: Anything that calls for, or requires a 32-bit Windows Explorer process to function is currently screwed as this has somehow got broken between the beta and RC versions - the Explorer window spawns but soon dies.

I'm having to use XP Mode for my (32-bit) email/news client, Turnpike - it works but it's a clumsy workaround.

BioShock doesn't. Apparently some people have got it working but it runs worse than in XP and Vista.. both visually and performance wise. And they couldn't get DX10 working in BioShock.

Well that was a fairly quick fix.. only about 2 months ago I couldn't get Bioshock to work and everyone was complaining about it on every forum they could get their hands on. I thought I'd at least have to wait til RTM, guess not

Nope. Somethings aren't working like cool n quiet, and I think that's because it's a weird motherboard, however the computer worked straight away and it installed the right drivers for just about everything automatically. I think I had some minor problem with the PCI-wireless card, but either it sorted itself out or I put in the driver CD that came with the card and it worked fine (suspect the latter, though the driver CD only had 2000/xp drivers on it but that was enough to ID the card and windows 7 then found the correct drivers).

Specifically on your internet problems, what does the windows 7 diagnostic tell you?

Re: Win 7(what doesnt work on it?)

not sure but on the network icon on the bottom right hand corner it just says no internet connection found i can access the bebox router fine though.

how do i go about doing a diagnostic on win 7? i tried doing a repair on the LAN connection and said it cant find a problem.
