its worth getting one, much faster install, plus you will find you will end up in a no CD drive situation before long.

Yeah, I will probably pick one up on my next Scan order. I just know at some point that I'll need a spare pendrive, blank it, and then need the Windows install the next day

You see, I'm sure I've read where people have done just that. Just extracted the ISO contents to the USB and booted from it without doing anything special to it. AFAIK they've never had issues with it not working that way.

Time to get myself a big USB stick and find out

I don't suppose making a muti-boot menu for different ISO's would be too hard either.

A pendrive with UBCD, XP, Vista, Windows 7 on....mmmmm....

It's relatively easy. I did something like that a while back, just on DVD.

Been a while since I did it though. Probably much easier to do it now, and alot more tools now aswell.

Back when I did it, alot of it was done in CD Shell, with some other hard to remember tools.

it may well be my motherboard, but when i make my pen drives bootable and fat32 and copy the win7 iso across they stop being detected by the mobo bios as though not plugged in, still available in windows though. thankfully iv got lots of dvds so i could do it the old fashioned way but i wonder if anyone else is having that issue. may have a quick test with ntfs tonight, see if its any different

    Re: Windows 7 RTM

Could well be. Booting from pendrives can be hit and miss at best with some motherboards

I think I might know how to make a nice multiboot DVD/Pendrive quite easily. It involves a bit of hackery, but it shouldn't be too difficult. Think I just found my next project

Will do a post on it if successful.

Good luck, I had lots of fun doing mine and learnt loads. Might have to re-visit this project now that Windows 7 is out. I would love a XP, Vista & 7 AIO DVD.

Contrary to perceived opinion, we have received very little if any requests to enable VT technology up until very recently.

In addition, our engineers and QA people were very concerned that enabling VT would expose our systems to malicious code that could go very deep in the Operating System structure of the PC and completely disable the latter.

For these two reasons we have decided, until recently, not to enable VT.

However, with the advent of XP Virtualization, there is impetus for us to relook at the situation and I can share with you that we will enable VT on select models.

Though, i fear t say that the Z series will not be part of our VT-enabling effort.

Indeed, we will focus on more recent models.

In the hope this clarifies the background of our decision as well as our plan moving forward.

Who wants to bet they will have a high/top-end range that does have VT technology. Guess I'm never buying a Sony laptop or recommending one again. Dirty sneaky tactics.

During the early days of laptops with CPUs that supported hardware assisted virtualization, people were obtaining (or creating?) firmware that had the option to toggle the feature on and off (people wanted to run Hyper-V on laptops with 64-bit CPUs for labs/demos).
If there are enough techy-savvy users of the hardware, sometimes the community end up with their own solution.
(Not as trivial as hacked firmwares for DVD drives or routers, of course )

That's a given, of course some clever folk are going to release some sort of modded BIOS firmware that will enable VT. But for the people who aren't tech savvy enough (and there's alot of them), they are buying a crippled laptop. Shame on Sony.
