Can anyone start off without using the string? Apparently it's possible but I can't do it.

Also, can anyone explain to me how it works? I don't know much physics but let's assume I understand the forces acting on a gyroscope .

I've heard you can but I too need the string as well, but seeing as I've lost all mine so I've resorted to using an old shoe lace - retro or what

I can start wit without the string, mainly cos winding the bloody think back in again annoyed me, quick flick of the thumb and off it goes...
Max I'va managed was just shy of 12k, might have to dig it out again and start using it properly as I only used it for a week or so after I first got it and then it just kinda lost its appeal, spose I could use it when out walking the dogs.

The gyroscope inside expels forces the faster it rotates.

As such it's an ideal toy for strengthening wrists, lower arms and used by sports persons world-wide to improve their grip etc.

I've seen a few vids on the site where users flick to start rather than use the string. I can't do it though.

Lost the string for mine, I usually start it off my leg these days. Best score is a little over 12k (right hand).

Also works well starting it off a pine desk, or a wall as my flatmate has pointed out

Floors work too (as long as your carpet isn't too deep pile).
