I think the new Control panel is a good first effort. It needs work, and is so simplistic it seems a bit rushed. The new Control panel really has been a long time coming and should have been implemented long ago (better late then never though).

The new Control panel is not only for MCE user however.

The MCE integrated Control panel (AVIVO TV Configuration Utility) seems a bit sluggish IMO but it could be that I just need to add that 1GB of RAM that I have sitting on my desk.

The generic XP Control panel in Windows Control panel (ATI TV Configuration) seems much faster.

I haven’t had much time to play with it yet so the overall usefulness of the new drivers and Control panel has yet to be seen.

At least the effort is being put into the 550/650 line.

Naturally, if the “Low Volume” bug hasn’t been fixed (and I suspect that it hasn’t) then the “Volume adjustment is basically useless,……

I purchased this card yesterday, downloaded the latest drivers and MCE2005 control panel etc but it does not work at all! Searched for any suggestions to make this go but no. When i start media center all i get is "Video Error, files missing" if I change for my old avermedia in its fine. Tried an older version of the drivers but still nothing. Also no other PVR software ie cyberlink and intervideo home theater will work with it all crash. got 1gb ram on an intel p4 865G chipset/graphics. Do you have to have an ATI video card for this to work? PS tried two cards and they both do the same. Geting frustrated. Cheers

Beyond TV or GBPVR. The first is about $60 and the second is free.

GBPVR wont set up properly. It keeps giving me errors. Are there any other free pvr softwares that are good with theater 550 pro?

    best app choices IMO :

    1. MMC 9.14 if you have an ATI video card that does deinterlacing
    2. winamptv if you play console games and want sub 40ms delay.

currently exploring intervideo windvr . looks promising because it deinterlaces and fullly supports the 550 regardless of video card . further testing needed. seems to only support line-in audio.

i also run win2k and detest winxp

thanks =) i installed mmc 9.14 but why is it that I cannot use my remote control to control the + and - channel ? I have an Ati Radeon 9600 video card btw.
Also, is there anyway to increase the volume because the volume isnt that great even on its highest.

    Hi,
    Some comments for you guys:
the_mouse, did you run through Settings -> TV -> Set Up TV Signal when you changed your card? You need to reconfigure MCE using this before you can get any new card to work. So try installing the latest drivers and do that. If that works fine, then try installing the control panel (be sure to install the C++ Patch before you install the control panel). Also keep in mind that you'll need to install a DVD decoder to get MCE to work.

ayds_, what remote do you have? Any of the ATI Remote Wonders should work with MMC. Regarding volume, try increasing the capture volume. The TV control panel from ATI currently has a bug where it won't save your changes after a restart so you can try using GraphEdit if you know how to use it. Otherwise, just wait for the control panel bug to be fixed, which is hopefully really soon. You can test it out by increasing the volume and hearing the results on the go, but it won't be saved after a restart.

i found how to use the + and - channel on the remote but i have to use the circle thing above the "ok" button to change the channel up and down and I also have to use toglgle button before i can change + or - channels. I have the MSI remote control. Also i installed the tv control panel and adjusted the volume but it's still the same as before. What's wrong? Im not restarting after changing the volume using the tv control panel but the volume is still the same.

    Hi,
    Some quick comments:
ayds_, I'm not sure what's going on with your remote, I'm not really familiar with the non-ATI ones, but you sound like you got it working. Regarding volume, the Theater 550 Pro does have an issue where sound volume doesn't go too loud (not really much difference past 150 or so). That's been reported and even posted on the ATI support KB. I'm not sure when there will be a fix for it (if ever), but the volume should be sufficiently loud for most users. It just won't let it go really loud. So if you want it as loud as possible just keep it at max (when the control panel bug is fixed - hopefully next release).

blandthaman, if you're considering getting a Theater 550 Pro based card, I do want to say that it is a good product and is still pretty much the best on the market. However, do keep in mind that we have our new Theater 650 Pro based products coming out really soon and those are even better quality and also support digital TV as well as analog (Theater 550 Pro is only analog). So if you can wait, I'd recommend you get our new product, but of course it's up to you!

ok, well is anyone experiencing the same problem as me? its really annoying to press the toggle button first and then using the circle thing to change channels up and down.

    Filters !

    MMike,

I have just read your reply that states "the preview and capture pins do exactly the same thing with the same response from filters", if that really is the case then I and several others I have spoken to all had dodgy cards ?

I tried all types of connection as many different ways as possible and there was a big difference in overall quality between preview and capture, and after my endless - labourious - boring filter tests I concluded that the filters perform some sort of 'auto filter' on preview but nothing on capture.

If it was a 'known' dodgy batch of cards then I would feel better about it but I have to say that I doubt it and honestly believe this card was never ever intended to capture and clean up external video sources (as advertised).

How many other people subscribed to this thread can confirm the same findings as me ?

Just a little info for select ATI hardware owners and MCE 2K5 users out there:

ATI’s AVIVO Video Converter utility which, supposedly works only with X1000 series products, seems to actually work with some non-X1000 series cards in MCE.

The following software/hardware combo results in AVIVO Video Converter functionality in MCE.

    Software:

Microsoft .NET Framework (a prerequisite of MCE).

Catalyst 6.6 Windows XP Media Center Edition Driver

    Catalyst Control Center

Encoder and Parental Control Visual C++ Patch Avivo Video Converter
    Hardware:

    Test configuration consists of

    Athlon 64 3000+
    ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
512MB TwinMOS Speed Premium PC3200 RAM
    ATI X800XL
    Visiontek Xtasy Theater 550 Pro
    ATI HDTV Wonder
    so on and so forth,…..
The AVIVO Video Converter utility is accessible in MCE 2K5 under “More Programs” but seemingly in no other location. The MCE version doesn’t allow the user to specify output file size, however, quality settings are available.

Perhaps this is the beginning of ATI providing the AVIVO Converter utility to ATI customers without the restriction of X1000 series cards or maybe its just a bug.

Those who want to use the utility and have MCE 2K5 may well give it a try.

If this has already been touched on before, sorry,.. guess you have been notified twice then

    Happy hunting,…
