From what I read its not 100% compatible, but I think its a sliding scale...so it'll work just with some bits greyed out?

Basically some shaders not in that hardware (like its Direct X 8.1 not 9)...i.e. its probably not the end of the world..

*edit* discussion http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-100192 people whinging but some talk of scaling back/doing in software not hardware...

    More details!

    From http://bbs.xlr8yourmac.com/ubb/Forum.../000918-7.html

Links to http://ladd.dyndns.org/xbench/merge.xhtml?doc1=90960 which when googling the HDD type takes me to http://www.toshiba-europe.com/storag...n.asp?page=PSP - which IS an 8Mb cache drive! Whats the betting that one will be in the final shipped versions?!? Chances of them putting a 2Mb one in to save a few quid? Are they THAT sneaky?

mostly. the keyboard layout is slightly different, and one or two keys such as eject won't work at all.

I dunno what the performance of Macs is like, so maybe 256MB RAM will be fairly quick?
It's an entirely different system to Windows remember.

If it had SPDIF output and Svideo as standard, it'd be a perfect HTPC.

256MB RAM isn't really enough, OSX is far happier with 512MB..

IIRC 256MB isn't enough to run Garageband 2 properly.

X is more memory efficient but it also likes to spread its legs....it uses RAM very well, but needs lots of it to get decent performance. Basically uses any spare RAM as a disk cache which speeds things up a shedload. 256MB will cut performance by...30%?? over 512MB. And I mean that as a hands on feel, I reckon. It will go from feeling responsive to sluggish.
    Well Hello!

Clearing up confusion about the Mac mini.

"While it is strongly recommended that you only have an Apple Authorized Service Provider crack it open and install RAM, hard drives, Airport and Bluetooth, it will NOT void your warranty if you do it yourself. As is standard operating procedure, however, anything you break while attempting anything on your own is not Apple’s responsibility and will not be covered under warranty. I think that is pretty much common sense." Kool

    ahhh, that's much better news..

having said that, Apple's price for the 256-512 upgrade costs no more than buying the ram from crucial and doing it yourself..

but then again if you have the 256 and do the upgrade, you've then got a 256MB stick you can sell on making the upgrade cheaper..

the question now is how you open it and how easy is it to open!

I can get a 1GB stick for £98, which is much better than paying £240 for exactly the same, plus I then have a 256 MB stick to sell on eBay!

Anybody know how to open them yet?

<EDIT> does the ram have to be both the same PC rating PC2700 and the same CAS rating?</EDIT>

I know someone working high up for Apple, and they've got me done on a priority list of pre-order for one of these. £339 is dirt cheap for what you're going to get.

Not too sure, but I'm hoping to open a nice parcel in about a fortnight.
