    Re: The 'STY' 4 4

Fitted the motherboard tray inside the case.

I had to manufacture a new bottom bracket as the case now sits a lot higher after the PSU modification.

A quick look at the back.

    Will fit the fan later.

Sorry to say this piggin but you don't really leave us with much to comment on, apart from "looking good"

You're just showing us snippets of end results, without us knowing where you're starting from or trying to end up with.
They are great pictures however you're very low on details and progression information.

You painted the dvd drive, what with?
You replaced the rear panel with a new one, did you have any trouble getting the old one off?, How did make the new one?, How did you rebuild it?

    P.S.

    Looking good

    Re: The 'STY' 4 4

Thank you both for your kind words.

I have always been a man of few words and more of action. lol
This is my first build log (and it shows)
I find it difficult taking the pictures when I am doing any part of the build as my hands are dirty and I don't want to mess up the camera.
Therefore you only get the after and not the before or during.

    As for the questions.

The back panel was completely replaced (no photos, sorry).
Its an integral part of the case, so the center was cut out and a new section manufactured from 1.2mm steel. The whole thing was then joined together with pop rivets.
The whole thing was then powder coated in black texture.

    As for the DVD drive.
That was stripped down and powder coated in black texture. (no photos again, the factory was closing and I had to get there quick)
The unit was then rebuilt and fitted.

    Re: The 'STY' 4 4

Just had a quick look through my photos and found these.

This is the front of the case, stripped down and powder coated.

This is the section that fits in the top of the case for the DVD drive to fit in.
Due to space limitations, the top slot had to be blanked off. This was achieved by fitting a Lian Li cover in the space.
The cover was bolted in and everything was powder coated.

Test fitted the DVD drive (before powder coat)

With the top rad fitted you can see there is not a lot of space with fans fitted top and bottom.
I was unable to fit a second drive due to the lack of clearance between the bottom of the rad and the top of the drive.

As you can also see, this has the original back panel fitted.
It was at this time I knew that the PSU would not fit and I would have to go back to the drawing board.

This then developed into having four fans top & bottom.

The next problem was where to put the hard drives!!!!!

    Re: The 'STY' 4 4

Am I the only person that thinks those rads are a bit of overkill? And also, what's all the space in the case going to be filled with? Seems to me that you could have fitted that system with a 3x120 rad into a med-large tower case quite happily.

I'm interested to see what you do with this. Not meaning to be critical, I just don't quite get it. Your fabrication skills are very impressive though, it's a beautifully neat build

That's a lot of nice stuff!
Do you have any idea of what sort of temps you will get when it is all done? And what sort of overclock you will be going for?
And how have you been doing all the case mods?

    Re: The 'STY' 4 4

I was looking at doing a SilverStone Temjin TJ07 build but there are a lot of them about.
This came along and I thought it would look good.
You are right about the size but I wanted a build that could be easily maintained and not feel as though I was decorating the hall via the letter box.
As for the size of the rads, big is beautiful and the temps will be low.

    Re: The 'STY' 4 4

    Hi lego batman
    Thanks for the kind words.
I don't know what temps I will be getting but I think they should be good when its finished.

    As for the overclock.
The motherboard that I have fitted is my DFI LP UT X58-T3eH8 that I have had for about a year now.
I have my D0 clocked @ 4.1GHz 24/7 using the DFI. I think it could do more but I do not want to kill anything.
I have been looking at the EVGA classified as the next possible upgrade.

    As for the case mods.
Most of it has been done in the garage with a 4 1/2" grinder with a 1mm cutting disk.

    Re: The 'STY' 4 4

Surely there is a point at which any further reduction in temperature has no discernable positive effect, but costs a lot more cashola? I don't claim to know what that is, but most modern cards are used to living at high temps for long periods

    Agreed

I don't know what temps I will have or have I spent a lot of money for very little gain.
All I know is I am enjoying doing the project and that's the most important thing.

    Re: The 'STY' 4 4

Have you got any more images of the rear panel? and how you converted that?
I did something simular on a cheap case as part of project spork and it was something I'd been looking at doing for a while, ie converting a case to a lower psu design/totally redoing the rear.

Have you done all the cutting & fab work yourself?
Where did you get your powder coating done?

    Re: The 'STY' 4 4

    Pob255
Sorry no more images, as I said I could not take photos when I was doing the fabrication. (mrs piggin would not allow it, its hers)
The rear of the case is one single piece of aluminum that has been folded on the top & bottom to make a shallow tray.
I measured out where the motherboard tray sits and cut up the sides. Ending up with a back section that looked like it had been manufactured from angle section.
I then had a piece of 1.2mm steel (supplied by 'dirty den', big thanks dirty) that was cut 2mm smaller than the total width/length of the back.
I then marked out where the PSU was going to sit and motherboard tray.
The steel was then 'modified' with a file, drill and angle grinder until I had a back panel.
The panel was then clamped into place and drilled through both sections.
3mm countersunk pop rivets were used to hold both pieces together.
When I was happy, the case was taken to Clarke coatings (in south wales) thanks Andy.
Later that day, I had a phone call and the case was completed (I wish).

The fabrication was all my own work, with 'dirty den' supplying the steel that was cut to size and 'don, do you know I am 58 1/2 years old' lending me his tools to do the work.

To be honest, having seen how poorly the mounting mods case is constructed and how much post fabrication I had to perform. I wish I had built something from scratch. Maybe next time. lol
