If you add the resistors, it gets detected, windows wil then set the timings making it go flickery for abot a min before p/s opens. While Im sure this doesnt damage it, I am sure it would be quite annoying.

Kez does your lm317 make a lot of heat? Im using a nb heatsink on mine and its still reaching 70c current draw is only 0.6A too....
I didn't seem to get P/S to get the screen going unless ATI Control Panel could detect it - I'll try again though.

As for the lm317 - oh yes, very hot, and I'm using a lesser heatsink than you - a heatsink designed for that packaging. It has thermal cutoff though, so don't worry.

Yes im very lucky it has thermal cut off. I assumed the output would be less than a watt and the bare TO-220 has a 50c/w rating. no suprise when I turned it on, went downstairs, that when I came back it was off. Withiout the cut off it would have burned out, or if it didnt, would have reached about 450c !!!!

Well, I'm going with resistors anyway, since I only use Linux... so no powerstip for me, just typing the timings into XF86Config, so they should stay right =). (the resistors are meant to be in parallel with the screen, right? It still seems to work with the psone, but I dont have a cable with the DCC pin on, so it won't turn on.)

I think I'll just go with a Matrox Mystique PCI, since being a Linux user I use an nVidia card as my main card, and it's only a ti4600, so no csync Matrox are good with opensource drivers too, so yay. *fleabays*

Oh, a note to people not going down the cat5 "monitor cable" route: make sure any cables you use have the DCC pin on both ends - quite a few brands dont, notably belkin (that's what I've tried anyway). Infuriating, since it's the only missing pin! personally I think cat5 seems easier now =)

For those not following SilentDeath and Kez here, ebay has 3rd party psone 12v car adaptors for ~£5, so hacking one of those up and plugging a molex into it would be nice and easy (if not as neat).

    Thanks guys

if youd prefer just the one card (i think gf4's are dual head?) it shouldnt be to hard to get csync from h and v sync. I remember seing the schematic somewhere, and could have a go at making it for you.
Some matrox cards havent got csync either but i think most do.

For those that do want to make tehre own psu these are parts you need:
maplin code | Part | Cost
    UF27E | LM317T | 49p
    RN73Q | Universal Heatsink | 99p
    UH02C or UH03D | Hor Encl Preset 4k7 or 10K | 19p
    G330R | MF Resistor 330R | 1p

Other usefull parts are a screw for the heatsink, assuming it doesnt come with one.
Stript board to solder it too (you could use wire instead, the circuit is simple).
    Wire.
    female molex connector for power
    pin header
connector for pin header + pins if it doesnt come with them

Then also I recommned an enclosure of some kind, esp if your lazy like me - cant be arsed to use a mica shim between the heatsink and lm317 (meaning the heatsink is connected to output, 7.5v - meaning you have to be carefull not to short it against something.)

I think I'll use the matrox anyway (the mystique does do csync and interlacing) since it's easier to configure in Linux with 1 screen per card. Dualview's a pain in the arse. that said, can I have a circuit diagram for the csync anyway please? And I might actually do that psu cos it'd be neater and doesnt look too hard =)

I'm going to put all the bits and pieces in a mappers project box, cos there's quite a bit of stuff now =)

LOL, the number of times people have linked to the same sites in this thread.

Guys, try to read it all - I know it's a big thread, but most of the info you need is in there already.

lol, sorry. I read it through, but I'm making decisions as I go along, and even scanning through the 15 pages it's run to is a total waste of time during exams perhaps a summary post at the beginning with links to important pages would be helpful?

AFAIK Powerstrip is the best way to find out what your card supports (look for grayed out options etc.) That said, an ATI card that new will do everything you need =) What I've picked up is that almost all Radeons do, but most nVidia cards excluding FX's don't support what you need.

A quick question - I'm going to need to be able to turn this off, preferably just with a flick switch on the case. Would a toggle switch on the +5V DCC line be able to turn the screen off, or should i put this in the power circuit?

cool, thanks proplus. I knew that the DCC line was used to turn it on, but I'd had reports from people who'd got that by plugging a PSone in, and when they removed it the screen stayed on...that didn't happen for me come to think of it though...

This is very frustrating. I have the display up and running fine on my windows machine using powerstrip but when I export the settings to Linux ModeLine and move the graphics card back to my linux machine the display just flickers. Is there anything that could be affecting the display on my test machine?

Just means the settings aren't right within linux, fiddle with it

By definition, in Linux you're using different drivers for the card, so the timings won't be identical - they should be pretty close thoug. what's your XF86Config look like?

you need a composite phono to 3.5mm jack, and the 3.5mm jack shlould have 3 black stripes, so not mono, not stereo but 3 (triplico?!).

the res of a pal screen is 576xsomething... read the thread. timings and refresh rates depend on the screen and card, again, read the thread

For TV Out, the exact resolution doesn't matter two much - I was running mine at 800x600 in overscan mode last night, when I was checking fit on my case. (And winamp vis does look very, very nice on it ).
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.
