That's a bit of an exagguration? I mean you're the only one I know whos had an Xbox fail on them out of many people.
None - My orginal Xbox is still going strong *touch wood*
One
Two
Three
Four or More
lol the fail rate of more than 30% speaks for itself plus the fact MS admited it too
none yet.....
but the dvd drive is kinda weird doesn't open when in vertical position
Yes, definitely, it's inexcusable. Very poor case design. If it weren't for this the console would almost be perfect.
Well, it's not the laser at all that's the problem, the laser isn't powerful enough to "burn" a disk. The problem is the laser housing. A small vibration can cause the disk to wobble, and this is worse if the disk is in the vertical position. When it wobbles, the disk comes into contact with various bits of the drive and scratches it. When you get funky swirly patterns on the disk that's because the laser housing fouled it. It wouldn't happen if they used decent disk drives.
And anyway, if the console is advertised as being able to stand vertically, then it should bloody well stand vertically without buggering up. The fault isn't of the user at all, it's still Microsoft's.
You should read my argument for not putting it horizontally - I'm not saying I am right but its an example of common sense at work. As velves said the problem with scratched disks is one of the drive housing or more specifically a batch of them missing parts that stops the head of the laser from coming into contact with the disk. The part missing is a simple rubber or foam shim iirc. The fact that such a simple yet vital part mysteriously went missing, portrays a problem with quality control at some point.
Add to this problem the fact that you have muppets that actually move the machine when the disk is spinning and you will get more cases of scratched disks coming out of the woodwork than would normally be the case - ignorance is bliss in their case. Plus if you look at the orientation of the power button symbol it would indicate that the xbox is meant to be stood vertical.

ffs i was just on the phone to MS about why its taking soo long for them to send my 360 back. they said it will be delivered within 7 days and i then brought up if i will get any compensation for waiting so long and the girl was about to put me through to someone else in regards to that and thats when she cut me off!!!!!!!!!!!!:
i cant be bothered to phone them back, i just used 20min of my time and money from my mobile phone calling them in the first place and if i call them now im gunna wait even longer for me to be connected to one of them
I must be unlucky, after 6 weeks my DVD drive broke, so it went back to MS for a fix. I get it back after a month, and 2 weeks later (today) I get the red rings of death, so its going back tomorrow to MS. Bit of a bummer, will have had the console for 4 months and 2 of those will have been spent broke... Kinda leaves a bitter taste in your mouth...
thats sound real bad man, i would demand a full refund or for them to send you a new one right now. Dispite MS renewing their warranty there stil a bunch of <edited>

I am on my third one now. First one worked fine for and then 6 months to the day that I first switched it on, it would hang in any game after about 10 minutes of playing. My second one last barely 2 months as the disc tray stopped recognising disc. I am on my third one now but have yet to have an xbox which was manufactured in 2007. The current one I got a few weeks back is from Nov-06.
Btw, my first xbox 360 was bought in Nov-06 so luckily for me I still have a couple of months warranty with GAME who to be honest are really great at replacing damaged 360s
