When I was around 6 I was playing Carmageddon, Dungeon Keeper 2 and The Settlers! I enjoyed RTS and racing games mainly because they were fast paced plus these games are very cheap these days

arcade has alot of games suitable for kids
Definitely can't go wrong with racing games, they tend to be addicting whatever the age. The Need for speed franchise puts out a few good street racing games.
Lego Star Wars/Indianna.
My nephews are really into the Harry Potter games, I think they're absolutely awful, but they can't get enough of them.
Surely modern warfare 2 is required playing at 6? on a serious note any of the lego games are awesome and since their all 2 player you can enjoy them too.
Lion King or any Sonic game : )
you joke but my son is always talking about his mate alfie in his class who is 5 (my son is 6) who plays black ops at home all the time on his xbox 360.
My son likes things like the earlier Colin mcrae games anything lego related. And he is a huge fan of portal but won't let him play it yet.
Maybe getting Age of Empires, like the really old one to get him used to RTS games (if he likes that genre already) or maybe Star wars Battlefront, both really lack any graphical violence and are very fun to play. hope i have been of assistance
IMO, now's a good time to introduce him to the wonderful world of retro gaming...let him appreciate the likes of classic games and then start weaning him/her into some 3D adventure games.
On another note, Minecraft is a pretty good family-friendly game for your kids to try out
Plants and Zombies, Trackmania or Shatter would be excellent choices. If you want to challenge your kids the get them Planescape Torment!
Plants vs Zombies, Lego Star Wars/Harry Potter/Indianna Jones, Viva Piniata
I've built up a lot of cheap indie games on steam and my 7yr old loves playing quite a few of them.
Although, he keeps asking to play Assassins Creed 2 because his friend in school plays it (not letting him play that just yet)

Airfight dogfighter
viva piƱata! I loved that game, even at the age of 19, and its a good colourful game for kids, might be a tad difficult later on in the game though
Get kinect
You should keep an eye out for the Humble Indie bundles that keep cropping up. They can be bought relatively cheap and usually have a good pick up and play element which might appeal to younger gamers.

If he enjoyed the Cars Radiator Springs game, then id probably go for another racing game.
If hes a 'young' 6 then there a quite a few other variants of the disney cars games. But if hes an 'older' 6 then the need for speed series are quite easy to pick up and a slightly older verions should be cheap to get too.
i agree - lego games!
i bought a lego game from hmv for 1.99... i can't remember the name. it's like hero factory.
