Mind you, didn't Hyperthreading have similar scheduling problems when it first came out?

From memory, it had all kinds of problems when it came to heavily threaded workloads and mulitasking, for similar cache-related reasons. I remember Microsoft releasing statements saying anyone running SQL Server on a HT capable Xeon should turn HT off as it *reduced* performance in heavily threaded scenarios.

It will be an issue for AMD if they can't get bulldozer working to full capacity until Windows 8 is released though.

So, from what I can tell, it doesn't offer much benefit over (and in some cases is worse than) the i5-2500k in gaming? Even in relatively multi-threaded ones such as Battlefield 3 (beta, I guess)?

That makes my life so much simpler. 2500K + P67 here I come

Thats what I remembered too. Well lets hope AMD can get a decent performance tuning for this in software, because I hate to say I don't think 10% improvement with piledriver is going to be enough over this

AMD is full of additional fail for not sending a sample to that website!! If what they say is right Piledriver is looking is looking to have a decent IPC increase over Husky at least under Linux.

The 10% comes from parked cores working correctly which means the overdrive kicks in more frequent....and the overdrive is around 15-20% clock speed increase.....and you wouldn't expect to see all of that improvement all of the time, so 10% sounds about right on average.

I don't think this in anyway takes into account the cache or FPU layout of the chip though.

Why? They managed to get by on what they have and now have a better choice of boards and marginally better prices....and they can wait a bit longer and go strait for SB-E now.....and that's if they decide to go Intel now.

Many were holding off for BF3.....the game I said a long time ago might look good on BD....and so far it does....without Windows 8, without a new CPU driver....

I tend to hold off upgrading until the silicon matures a bit now and drops in TDP for instance, hence the 95w TDP 1055T and 45w 5050e I have now. Still quite impressed by the performance of Thuban and it's more than fast enough for what I do so I'll probably skip over BD Gen. 1. I'm also VERY unimpressed with the Windows 8 interface, I really hope they have a 'sane' option to get back a normal desktop+Start menu or I won't be keep to upgrade to that any time soon.

TBH,anyone who could wait did not really need an upgrade quickly in the first place. As I have mentioned a few times before if you need to upgrade soon then do it and if not it was worth seeing how Bulldozer panned out.

Early adopters of SB were stung by the chipset issues and having to swap some boards out,and a number of people at the beginning also killed their CPUs by adding too much voltage. The prices of the i7 2600K seem to have dropped since launch and stabilised,the i5 2500K price has risen a bit but also drops sometimes. This is probably to do with exchange rates. The Z68 also has been released meaning P67 prices have also dropped,as have the H67 and H61 motherboards which are also cheaper.

However,RAM,HDDs and SSDs have plummeted in price. 8GB of RAM has dropped by £30 to £40.
