    Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat

Given up on amd after bulldozer fiasco. I've still got an 1100t but going to end up chopping it in for an i7 2600k as the intel uses SOOOOOO much less electricity whilst stil being more powerful.

Very sad to see amd not just being behind at the higher end as usual but actually being so far behind as to be laughable. I mean I never thought they would have the audacity to release a next gen chip that's not just uncompetitive with intel but not even competitive with their previous gen chips!!!

Before anyone writes me off as an intel fanboy, not true, I've had loads of amd CPUs in the past, I move to what's competitive at the time. Currently that's intel all the way.

At Intel prices, of course. ~£100 market is definitely a lot more competitive.

CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

    Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat

If you look at recent benchmarks, the newer models for instance, power use really isn't that bad; it was yield problems affecting the first few batches that you'll see in most benchmarks, GloFo has decent yields now.

Depending what you're doing, they can be very competitive, beating SNB in some apps, and something CAT (IIRC) found a while back: http://legitreviews.com/article/1838/1/

I don't see a compelling reason to upgrade from Thuban either, but to be fair, a single gen hasn't offered a significant jump for some time, and I wouldn't see much of an improvement going to SNB either.

Yeah. Llano may have a weak CPU but it's good enough for most people. If AMD aren't bullcrapping about the 30% increase in x86 performance and 50% increase in GFX performance of Trinity, it will have an reasonable CPU and good enough for PC Gaming GFX making it decent enough for all but the most performance craving of enthusiasts.
Unfortunately you can never tell with AMD. Whether their next CPU/APU is awesome or utter junk, their hype machine is identical.
The only reason I now need lots of CPU power is for occasional video transcoding for my freesat box.
If Trinity can deliver, I might just go for that. Currently I'm 50/50 as to whether the hype is for real.

    Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat

I will admit that Liano is impressive. I almost bought one the other week tor un in the living room. Hanfe helt off for now still tempted to get an i5 2500k and dedicated GPU of some sort.

It's a shame AMD seems to have sacrificed the high end to concentrate on the low end? They need to do both!

VCE should hopefully help with that.

    Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat

    Quoted from article:
The third generation FX processor, codename Steamroller, is still reported (not confirmed) to use AM3+, meaning that there are still quite a few years left in this platform when taking the AMD route.
But like I said, I'd be surprised if it actually does.

    Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat

There's not an awful lot to change with a CPU socket now the chipset is moving to the CPU (Intel still finds excuses) but moving PCIe to the CPU and upgrading the IMC would be obvious improvements. It comes down to whether AMD thinks it's worthwhile investing in development now and possibly having a socket that will last for one generation and/or hinder future CPUs or continuing support for as long as possible before making a major jump to the next socket with DDR4.

    Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat

    I hope:
DDR4 is widely available by the time steamroller is out
Steamroller uses a new socket with PCIe on chip and loads of power improvements. (AM4?)
Strearoller then only needs 2 channels for plenty of bandwidth (due to DDR4)
Steamroller has great single threaded/lightly threaded performance.

I'll still not be interested in the AM4/AM3+ version. It'll be the A series that interests me.

    Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat

DDR4 doesn't work like 2/3 with channels, it's a point-to-point system, with each module effectively having a channel of its own.

AMD moving its server CPUs over to DDR4 will probably be the point when the desktop CPUs will end up doing so too IMHO.

That always used to be their way, but are they using the llano socket in any servers yet? The server/desktop line seems to be splitting away from each other.
