It is kind of strange that AMD are showing off Bulldozer based Trinity ES CPUs but none of the Bulldozer CPUs ES themselves??
I think they played a risky game, designing a completely new architecture along with a new process. Maybe they'll take a leaf from Intel's book and do something like tick-tock in future?
I'd be lying if I said this wasn't disappointing, I only hope it's as CAT said and they are trying to compete with SB-E. Maybe they want the title of the first x86 CPU to pass 4GHz? Who knows, but I hope the wait is worth if, for everyone's sake!
@Biscuit: That's probably what I'd do (AM3+ MB now), and you can even get Thuban chips dirt-cheap now.
Edit: Oh and Cray buying into Bulldozer can only be a good thing...
The thing is though if BD was an entire fail AMD probably would have looked at porting over a Phenom II onto 32NM, added some more L3 cache and jacked up the frequencies. The CPU component of Llano is essentially a Phenom II with no L3 cache and a much lower TDP(so they can fit the powerful IGP).
There are some people who saying that clock for clock Bulldozer is around the same speed as a Phenom II which is daft. Even the original Phenom had better IPC than the Athlon X2 and the former was an improved Athlon in many ways. It was the lack of clockspeed which was the main issue with the Phenom and the high power consumption.
TBH,at this rate AMD will probably launch a Phenom II X4 running at 4GHZ!!
It does seem the newer Phenom II X4 processors do overclock better with some reaching 4.4GHZ to 4.5GHZ on air cooling and at reasonable voltages too!!
Looks like intel win again.....
What socket......what chip set?
ahh i7 extreme anyone...? or should I wait for BD?
Looks like it is sandy bridge for me then
The sad thing is people have been waiting a long time for this, some people have been very loyal to the brand.
To not get the CPU's that were promised ages ago is disappointing, how do you tell people who've been waiting for an upgrade not to go sandybridge?
Intel may take the utter piss when it comes to pricing, but they always seem to be able to produce the end product, near(sometimes earlier) there estimated time.
AMD needs a change in there thinking method, we need them to be able to competitive for everybody's benefit whether you like Intel or AMD...
Well AMD have to get some kind of performance win. They can't survive selling products that cost more to make yet sell for less than Intel equivalents.
What is 3 months when we've been waiting for years anyway?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

I get the feeling they seem to be focusing more and more of the efforts on products which do well in the mobile space. First Zacate and now Llano. I suppose there is a method to the madness as desktop sales are declining and many desktop sales are still lower end models AFAIK. In fact the only demos of Llano have been with the mobile versions so far. Now,they show us Trinity which is the Llano replacement.
However,it is annoying for us desktop fans!!
