I wouldn't put this in the hall of greats like Gears 2, but its a plain fun mindless game that anyone can get into.

that about sums it up for me as well

    Re: Prototype

On my first play through this I found just as I was getting board of it new upgrades were made available. And I found they opened up a new way to play it.

And when I finished the game first time I found that either I had still a lot of upgrades I hadn't used or that I had new skills I did not know how to use. In that respect I found there it made me want to start again and continue leveling up.

I also liked the mood and feel of the game. As the game started your character say admits he is a terrorist and a murderer. For a change it felt good that you had these really good abilities without the "I must fight all evil and do good" hanging over you.

In fact it made me giggle at just how blatantly it encourages the carnage and slaughter.

And I also liked the way you could break away from the carnage completely simply by ducking into an alleyway and morphing into a soldier or ped. It's moments like when you walk into the huge base far North in disguise souronded by loads of soldiers and letting rip with a devestator attack.

I think what I like the most about this game is the moments I have had and still have in this game that I have not had in any other. Like running up the side of a building with a car over my head. When I get to the top I lob the car at a helicopter. It spins out of control. I hit the button for my power menu to pop up and everything goes slow mo. I select my whip ability and grapple on to another helicopter and pull myself up to hijack it. I use this helicopter to take out the last. Then I go up high in the helicopter before leaping out. I slam down into the grown hard sending people flying. Then I hit my pop up menu again it goes into slow mo. I choose my blade skill and jump and slam into a tank destroying as the helicopter I just jumped out of comes crashing down taking out a car and loads of rioting infected.

Then you finish of with a devestator attack and everything dies. You morph back into a soldier and walk away.

Nope your not. Not really enjoying it all that at the moment either, but then i just completed infamous. I just felt more immersed in Empire city, and the paths Cole can take and the side missions available. I might come back to prototype later though (when its on platinum)

I think the controls are indebted to assassins creed. It plays very similar in how smooth the free running is. Personally I think all 3rd person games could take a leaf out of AC's fluid movement and seemless controls. Prototype is similar handling but not quite as smooth or accurate. Changing powers is still too fiddly for my liking.

Just killed green. was pretty easy really. I died once in the process. Best to just keep your distance.

All in all i think this is better than the mediocre reviews made out. I'd give it an 8/10 for sheer fun. Graphics and lack of depth of gameplay and storyline let this down. Something they could quite easily improve for the sequal, if they do one. Which I hope they do.

I have never played Assassins Creed. But from videos I have seen AC's system looked a lot better and you seemed to interact more with the scenery. I would have loved to have seen that kind of interaction with Prototype.

Thinking about it, maybe Assassin's Creed could be one for me. Sorry to go off topic, but does that have a free roam mode?

Yes it is essentially free-roaming, if you don't want to follow the main story there are other things to do!

Will be looking forward to Assasin's Creed 2 deffinately.

I did a quick review of Prototype Here for anyone interested.

Mate trust me...GET ASSASSINS CREED!!! It's absolutely brillaint in my opinion. All the things that prototype lacks, it has. Stunning graphics, its so cinematic. Enthralling storyline (gotta love all that holy grail conspiracy nonsense). Alright you don't have radge super powers but you can scale any building. Free roaming is a massive part of the game much like prototype. Enjoy! Cant wait for AC2 to be honest!

Pretty good review, in that you sum up how I feel of the game quite aptly. You didnt give it a final score out of ten though...what do you rekon? I've said 7-8/10...

    Re: Prototype

I got Assassins Creed and actually only recently played and completed it... and it too is amazing (and I would say better)! The mission variation gets a bit repetitive but I like to make it my own by doing the sub-objectives like saving citizens etc. The story on it was actually very gripping particularly towards the end, and rather cleverly done - I can't WAIT until Assassins Creed 2! I also loved the way on that game that when your abilities got better and you got better weapons, you could virtually take on anyone.

I do agree that Prototype has likely been inspired by the fluidity of the controls for movement and action from AC, but I like the way the Prototype Devs took it further. I find the ability menu works so well with the slow-mo, and allows me to choose something like the whip power while flying about to finish off a helicopter in mid-air etc.

I am using a 360 to play this mind you, so I'm vouching for how easy the controls are on a joypad.

Took your advice and bought it.
I was not so sure at first. But then I learnt stealth kill when you run along and jump on them.
I just got to the second set of people to murder and then mastered counter fighting and found myself killing everyone with ease in a fight. So I have restarted. A very pretty an polished game. Very slick.

When I played Prototype this morning it felt so inferiour. I know Prototype is a different type of game. And the way Mercer hammers it along suits the game it is. But I'm replaying it on hard now and I am aiming for gold in all the events. But when such events require the use of auto aim and it completely sucks ass it puts the expierience on a downer.

Prototype is still a good game IMO. Above average. But playing Assassins creed today blew me away. Bigger than Prototype, prettier and more polished. I didn't think it was realistic for Protoype to be really amazing visually with the freedom and abilities it offers and have everything work spot on. But they managed it in Assassin's Creed eh?
So thanks for recommending that one.

    Re: Prototype

I'm too currently playing through Assassin's Creed. It's alot more polished and pretty than Prototype. Prototype was more "fun", where as AC is quite serious.

The fighting system is random though. Sometimes I can kill hordes of baddies without losing a block of life. But sometimes a puny solider nearly kills me!

Movement is also a little annoying, especially when you climb to the top of a view point, only to find that it's incredible hard to get onto the final ledge. Not because it's in a awkward place, but because you a right next to it, and it won't recognise you there so you can grasp onto it.

And the missions are kind of getting repetitive too. Going to a city. Climb towers. Save Ciztens. Do atleast 3 other side missions (flags, stealth kill, destroy bad traders, escort and others). And then do the final mission for that city.

    Re: Prototype

The worst thing about AC is the repetitiveness. Once you've killed a target in each city you've pretty much seen all there is to offer. Towards the end I was just playing for the sake of finishing and not because I enjoyed it. It did completely blow me away at first though. I loved just running around and stealth killing guards and stuff. I hope AC2 has a little more variety.

I for one hope they add some sort of experience system. For the first city, I was just having fun fighting guards, and I must have killed everyone in sight. As well as stealth killing near enough all rooftops guards. A nice reward for that could have been 'faster running speed' or 'here have another chunk of health' or 'more damage to weapon x' (I know you get the latter upgrade later on in the game).

It just doesn't feel like the game rewards you for having fun.

And yeah, I can see myself only completing it for completing it's sake. Not because I want to.

i was gonna buy prototype yesterday but after reading through this thread i changed my mind and got red faction guerilla instead, I hope i made the right choice have heard so many good things about it.

Also +1 for assassins creed one of the few games on my xbox i went through twice and the second time wasnt for gamerscore it was just to try and get some more inventive kills.

    Re: Prototype

I think that the pakour aspect for Prototype for me was a big let down. It is fun leaping from roof to roof. But I think if they had put more details into the enviroment and had you interact more with it then I think that could have made a better expierience.

Assassins Creed has great Pakour and you can improve on it. I have been playing the game slow. I start one city, get to all the lookouts and save citizens along the way before going after my mark. Then that will be it for at least a day. Although last night I spent hours running around leaping on ledges and then I mastered fighting. I just had to delete my profile and start from the begining again as I will be able to plan out the early levels well.

I can see it getting repetitive as you guys say. But bloody hell, this is such a well made game.
