I have been playing left4dead for a few days now in the dark (with no lights) & it really scares the sh*t out of me . The blood harvest campaign is too creepy that i get really nervous and my insides go all funny.

Well, the curse of games publishers/developers trying to stop pirates but inflicting pain on legitimate purchasers has struck again !
L4D is near impossible to play on a LAN, Valve have decided that you can only start a local server in L4D if you are connected to the Internet !. Place Steam in offline mode and all you can do is play a single player game.
Even if you setup a dedicated server on your LAN you have to fire up the developer console and them type cryptic commands to be abel to connect to it.
You can see that they've done this so that those who pirate the game can't play it over Hamachi etc, but it also screws over those legitimate purchasers who want to have a LAN party and play it.
From here on out I will not pre-order or buy ANY PC game until it's been released and I know for certain what DRM it uses and whether or not LAN play works
Only recently got onto this, not a bad game at all

Thought it gets a bit repetative, great fun online though, good acheivments too!
What are you talking about? have you at least downloaded the latest updates for L4D? with the recent downloads me and my friends are easily able to have a LAN party... we bring about 3 Xbox 360 and 5 minutes later were splashing blood all acrosss our favorite map in L4D.
The recent updates really have improved gameplay with LAn and online play, I play it quite regularly now, so much fun
Bizarrely we played it at a LAN last week and had no real problems... though I just join the games rather than set them up so I don't know what happened there.
Edit: although melee hax is infuriating as infected (and fun as survivors - RMB, Q, RMB, Q, RMB, Q, RMB for those not in the know), and the scoring system on vs needs improving. On the finale, getting near to the final area == surviving the final area for 10 minutes then dying because the infected is an ass and has gone as tank inside the APC, lol.
Dreaming

didn't know about the speed meleé thing! looks very useful (though I can see valve taking it away in a future update)
Wanted to try it out but Valve pulled the Demo.
Sorry but no demo = no sale.
Silly decision. I should be allowed to see if i even like it before i shell out the money for it!

HEXUS FOLDING TEAM It's EASY
But i want a demo!!! Why would they pull a demo?! Surely if its that good they have nothing to fear?
Plus this year and this time of year especially money is tight. I don't want to take the chance. I know its only £26 but if i don't like it that's £26 that could of been spent on something useful!

To be fair. The demo was available for quite some time. Basically the demo turned into the full product if you purchased it on Steam. I doubt they would have gone on supporting a online demo-client after all this time. Maybe a single player version demo? but then its multiplayer where this game really shines (especially in co-op with mates)
We having a session Boxing day lined up, cant wait
Were you connected to the internet when you started/connected to a game over a LAN ?.
About two weeks ago when I last played it on a LAN, whilst having no connection to the internet and having everyone's PC's connected using a small hub/switch, you have to fire up the console and start a local game from the command line and then get everyone to connect to you from the command line as well.
Compare this to the perfection that is Counter Strike Source on a LAN
good fun. My friend bought the 4 player pack so we could all play together. Tis good fun, having some trouble on expert mode, but haven't tried all that much yet. It's good and different things happen so you can't predict exactly what is going to happen.
